Hi bhergar56,
I'll try to describe the simplest possible MIDI connection. The following settings are necessary so that you can control the SX900 with the Kawai keyboard. (
The Kawai keyboard then behaves exactly like the internal SX900 keyboard.)
1. Connect the DIN MIDI OUT of the Kawai to the DIN MIDI IN socket of the SX900 using a MIDI cable (5-pin DIN plugs on both ends).
2. Make sure that the Kawai is transmitting on MIDI Channel 1 (= usually standard).
3. On the SX900: Press "
Menu >
MIDI" and make sure that the
Preset MIDI template "
All Parts" is selected (at the top, in the middle of the MIDI display).
4. Press the "
Receive" tab to call up the "Receive" display.
5. In the first line of the list you should see that the
Channel "
Port1 Ch1" is set to the
Part "
Song".
6. Now change the
Part in this (top) line to the setting "
Keyboard".
7. Press the right-pointing arrow to the right of "Part" to view additional settings.
8. You will see that ALL ticks are set in all five columns (Note, CC, PC, PB, AT).
9. In the first line (for "Port1 Ch1")
remove the two ticks for "
CC" and "
PC" (which means "Control Change" and "Program Change"). This is necessary to avoid accidentally switching something on the SX900 when selecting voices / sounds on the Kawai.
10. Now you have to save the changed MIDI setting of the SX900: To do this, press "
Save" in the MIDI display. Use a meaningful file name such as "KawaiMaster".
11. Finally, please make sure that your newly created
User MIDI template is now SELECTED (instead of "All Parts"). Only then will it be automatically reloaded after the SX900 is restarted.
12. Done!
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Chris
