Accessing a non-sequential preset from another MIDI device
In this example well set the FCB1010 to DIRECT SELECT disabled mode, and program preset 5 in Bank 0 to send a MIDI Program Change message to call up preset 30 another device. You would start by connecting from the MIDI OUT/THRU jack on the FCB1010 to the MIDI IN jack on the other device.
Setting the FCB1010 to work in DIRECT SELECT disabled mode:
(This also covers selection of the MIDI transmit channel)
1. Reset all presets on the FCB1010 by holding footswitches 1 and 6 while powering up. The display will show numbers that cycle from .0.9 to 00.
2. Press and hold the DOWN switch during a second power-up to enter the GLOBAL SETUP mode. The green DIRECT SELECT LED will be lit up. If footswitch 10 is lit up, press it to turn it off, and the FCB1010 will be set for use in DIRECT SELECT disabled mode.
3. Press the UP switch to go to the next level, and the green MIDI FUNCTION LED in the GLOBAL CONFIGURATION portion of the display will start to flash.
4. Press footswitch 1. The LED for that footswitch will flash and 01 will appear in the display.
5. Press the UP switch and the green MIDI CHAN LED will light up.
6. Press footswitches 0 and 1, so that 01 appears in the display.
7. Press the UP switch again to confirm the chosen MIDI channel.
8. Press and hold the DOWN switch until 00 appears in the display, and you will have left the GLOBAL SETUP menu.
9. Set the other MIDI device to respond to MIDI channel 1 if it isnt already.
Selecting an FCB1010 preset and programming it to select a different preset number on the other MIDI device:
1. Now well select the BANK and PRESET number to be used on the FCB1010. Use the BANK UP and/or DOWN switches to make 00 appear in the display (to select Bank 0).
2. Press footswitch 5 on the FCB1010 to light up its LED, and preset 5 will be selected.
3. Press and hold the DOWN switch for about 2 ½ seconds to enter the PRESET programming mode. The number in the display will disappear, and the green SWITCH 1/SWITCH 2 LED will flash.
4. Press the UP switch and the green SELECT LED will light up.
5. At this point, if the LED on footswitch 1 isnt lit, press and hold the switch for about 1 ½ seconds until it is lit. We have now selected Program Change Command #1 (shown as PRG CHG 1 on footswitch 1).
6. Press footswitch 1 briefly and it will start to flash.
7. Confirm the MIDI function by pressing the UP switch, and the NUMBER LED will light up.
8. Use the footswitches to make 30 appear in the display (this is the program number you want to access on the other MIDI unit).
9. Confirm your selection by pressing the UP switch, and the SELECT LED will light up.
10. Leave the PRESET programming mode by pressing and holding the DOWN switch until a red dot appears in the display, followed by a number. The programming steps are now complete.
11. Use the BANK UP and/or BANK DOWN switches to choose bank 0 (00 will appear in the display, then press footswitch 5 to light it up, and preset 30 on your other MIDI device should be called up. Dont be alarmed if preset 29 is called up on the other MIDI device, as the FCB110 starts with preset 0 and other units can start with preset 1. Modify step #8 above if needed.

An example of accessing a Control Change number on another device
In most situations, the FCB1010 is used to access specific presets/programs on effect units and other devices, but in this example, FCB1010 preset 1 in Bank 00 will be used to access the User preset bank, by sending a Control Change number of 0 and a Value of 32 as part of the FCB1010 preset. After this has been done, other FCB1010 presets can call up specific User presets on the effect unit. Ideally, you will want to program another FCB1010 preset that will allow you to access the Internal or Factory (also called Internal) preset bank, and there is a step at the end of this procedure to show you how to program and use FCB1010 preset 2 in Bank 00 to do this.
NOTE:
Before beginning any programming on the FCB1010, you will need to set the other device to receive on MIDI channel 1.
Using GLOBAL CONFIGURATION on the FCB1010 to choose DIRECT SELECT disabled mode and to set MIDI function 10 to MIDI channel 1:
1. Hold the DOWN switch while turning on power to the FCB1010 until the DIRECT SELECT LED is lit.
2. Press the 10 switch if its LED is lit up, so that it is unlit.
3. Press the UP switch to confirm your choice, and the MIDI FUNCTION LED will flash. The DIRECT SELECT disabled mode is now selected.
4. Press the 10 switch to make its LED flash, then press the UP switch, and the MIDI CHAN LED will light up.
5. Press switches 0 and 1 to make 01 appear in the display. Press the UP switch and the CONFIG LED will light up. You are still in GLOBAL CONFIGURATION mode.
Using GLOBAL CONFIGURATION mode on the FCB1010 to set MIDI functions 1 through 9 to function on MIDI channel 1 (MIDI function 10 has already been set in an earlier step):
1. Press the UP switch and the DIRECT SELECT LED will light up.
2. Press the UP switch to go to the next level, and the MIDI FUNCTION LED will light up.
3. Press the 1 switch and its LED will flash. Press UP to confirm, and the MIDI CHAN LED will light up.
4. Use the 0 and 1 switches to enter 01 in the display if it isnt there already. Press UP and the CONFIG LED will light up.
5. Continue to follow steps 1-4 above to set MIDI functions 2 through 9 to transmit over MIDI channel 1. To do this, replace the 1 switch in step three with the 2 switch, then 3 switch and so on, all the way through 9.
6. Press and hold the DOWN switch until 00 appears in the display. You will have left the GLOBAL CONFIGURATION mode, and you can now access and program FCB1010 presets.

Using PRESET CONFIGURATION to choose the preset to be used on the FCB1010 to access the User preset bank on the other device:
1. Use switch 10/0 to make 00 appear in the display. Press the 1 switch to light it up. Youve now selected bank 00, preset 1.
2. Press and hold the DOWN switch until the green SWITCH1/SWITCH 2 LED lights up. Press the UP switch and the green SELECT LED will light up.
3. Press and hold switch 6 to light it up. Press switch 6 again to make it flash. Press
the UP switch to make the green NUMBER LED light up.
Press the 0 switch to make 00 appear in the display, then press the UP switch to confirm the process. This will tell the other unit that a will be selected.
4. Press switches 3 and 2 to make 32 appear in the display, and press UP to confirm the choice (by entering a value of 32 at this point you will have selected the user preset bank) and the green SELECT LED will now be lit.
5. Press and hold the DOWN switch (a red dot will appear momentarily in the display) to leave the PRESET CONFIGURATION mode.
6. You can now use the UP and DOWN switches to call up any bank numbered 00 to 09, and any switch numbered 1 through 10 to call up any of the 100 user presets on the effect unit.
7. At this point it would be best to program an FCB1010 preset to access the Internal preset bank on the effect unit, so that you can have access to those 100 presets when needed. You can do this by following steps 1 through 6 above, while changing two of the values within those steps. In step 1, use switch 2 to select preset 2 in bank 00. In step 5, press switch 10/0 to make 0 appear in the display.
8. You have now programmed FCB1010 presets 1 and 2 to switch between the effect unit User and Internal preset banks. This may sound confusing, but you will need to enter in these preset numbers TWICE each time to switch the banks. For example, lets say you have selected preset 1 in Bank 00 on the FCB1010 and you are selecting User presets on the DSP2024P. If you want to switch to the Internal preset bank on the DSP2024P you will need to press switch 2 twice (2,2) in essence entering the number 22 before you can make the change. (Just to clarify why it works this way, heres another example when you first select FCB1010 preset 1 you are choosing to select the User preset bank on the DSP2024P. Then it is likely that you will choose an FCB1010 preset other than 1 and this will select a specific User preset on the DSP2024P. If you now select FCB1010 preset 1 you will get another specific User preset on the DSP2024P. Select FCB1010 preset 2 and you will first get a specific DSP2024P User preset. Select FCB1010 preset 2 a second time and it will now choose the Internal preset bank on the DSP2024P.)

17. Leave the PRESET programming mode by pressing and holding the DOWN switch until a red dot appears in the display, followed by a number. The programming steps are now complete.
18. Use the BANK UP and/or BANK DOWN switches to choose bank 0 (00 will appear in the display, then press footswitch 1 to light it up, and preset 30 on the MIDI device set to receive on channel 1 will be called up. (Dont be alarmed if preset 29 is called up on the other MIDI device, as the FCB110 starts with preset 0 and other units can start with preset 1. Modify step #8 above if needed). You can now press switch 2 to access preset 40 on the MIDI device that is set to receive on channel 2.
The FCB1010 can send transmit on up to five MIDI channels, and you can send the messages over one channel at a time, or over all five channels from one preset. For example preset 1 on the FCB1010 could send messages to five other MIDI devices set to receive on five different channels.
FAQ
What are the main MIDI messages that the FCB1010 can send to other devices?
There are three main MIDI message 'types' that the FCB1010 will send to other devices:
- Program changes are often used to call up effect presets or programs. These can also be used to call up a function, as in Tuner ON for an amplifier.
- Control changes are used to call up a specific function, like channel switching on an amp, or to choose between User and Factory preset banks on a processor. This will often consist of two steps, including a first message to tell the unit that there is a certain type of message coming (like 'Bank Selection'), and then a second message to give a specific value to call up the actual selection (like '01' to call up the User preset bank).
- Continuous Controllers are accessed to allow use of an Expression pedal for use with a specific parameter, like volume or Wah effect.
An example of the above can be found in a single FCB1010 preset that is created to include a Program Change to call up an effect preset, a Control Change that will switch channels, and continuous controller messages to allow use of the expression pedals to control Wah and volume.
The expression pedals are calibrated and completely checked before they leave our Facility. However it is possible that during transportation or influence of temperature the calibrated values have become misaligned. Here is a way to re-calibrate your expression pedals.
Calibration Self test FCB1010:
1. Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI IN to the MIDI OUT/THRU on the FCB1010 (see above).
2. Keep pedal 1 and 3 pressed while switching on the unit, then let go of the switches. The unit is
in self test-mode now, all the LEDs will light up one by one, and then the LEDs for the switches will all remain lit up.
3. Push all pedals now (one at a time, including the UP and DOWN pedals) until all LEDs are off.
4. Wait until relay test is finished. A1 will show up in the display, indicating that the MIDI ports work correctly.
5. Press the down-button once.
6. Adjust the left expression pedal (A) to the lowest value (e.g. your heel all the way down). Once
adjusted, press UP to confirm.
NOTE: THE VALUES DISPLAYED DURING THIS PART OF THE PROCEDURE ARE NOT NECESSARILY LOGICAL (E.G. THEY DO NOT ALL CORRELATE TO A NUMBER BETWEEN 0-127). FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AS WRITTEN & DISREGARD ANY STRANGE ALPHANUMERIC COMBINATIONS
THIS IS NORMAL FOR THIS PROCEDURE!!!
7. Adjust the left expression pedal (A) to the highest value (e.g. your toe all the way down). Once
adjusted, press UP to confirm.
8. Adjust the right expression pedal (B) to the lowest value (e.g. your heel all the way down). Once
adjusted, press UP to confirm.
9. Adjust the right expression pedal (B) to the highest value (e.g. your toe all the way down). Once
adjusted, press UP to confirm.
The pedals are now calibrated - and there should be a value of 0-127 transmitted from the MIDI output after programming and moving the expression pedal.
