A. Creating a Song Title name for registrations

For my registrations, I like to include a "dummy" song file in the SONG cell of the MAIN display screen with a title that reflects the song the registration is for. A MIDI file created on the Yamaha keyboard can, however, include instructions that can alter the style, tempo and other keyboard settings. You need to be aware of this. "Dummy Midi" titles created using the "SafeDummy.mid" file found in the example files will not change any keyboard settings. In the steps shown here, you can make a copy of the "-SafeDummy.mid" file and rename it to the song title you want to use in creating a registration. For example, if you were going to create a registration for Misty and one for My Romance, you would make a dummy midi file called "Misty.mid" and one called "My Romance.mid".

  1. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.
  2. From the MAIN display window, press the [A] button to select the SONG function.
  3. <TAB> to the location of your song folder, either CARD or USB1. If you are using the example files, this will be where you stored the "--REG SONGS" folder.
  4. Press the button next to the "--REG SONGS" folder to select and open that folder.
  5. From the displayed list of song titles, press the button next to "-SafeDummy" to select that title; it will be highlighted.
  6. Press button [3] down to select the COPY function.
  7. You are prompted "Select File/Folders" and given the choices: ALL, OK, and CANCEL. Since "-SafeDummy" is already highlighted, press button [7] down to select OK. This places a copy of the "-SafeDummy.mid" song into temporary memory.
  8. Press button [6] down to select the SAVE function.
  9. The current song title ("-SafeDummy") appears in the EDIT window at the bottom of the display screen.
  10. Using the editor, delete the displayed title and replace it with the title of the song you want.
  11. Press button [8] up to select OK and a copy of the renamed file is now saved in the "--REG SONGS" folder.

It is also possible to create a number of "dummy" song titles by using your computer with the USB memory plugged into it. This would be much faster than using the PSR/TYROS keyboard. Use the standard Windows COPY and PASTE commands to make a copy of -SafeDummy.mid and then the RENAME command to rename the file to the song title you want.

B. Creating a New Titled EMPTY Registration Bank

To build registrations for the PSR/TYROS keyboards, it is useful to start with an "empty" registration bank, that is, a registration bank with nothing saved in any of the 8 button positions. There is an empty registration bank, labeled "--EMPTY", which is provided in the "--REG SENIORS" demo folder. In the steps below, you will make a copy of this file and rename it to create a new "empty" registration file.

  1. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.
  2. Press the [J] button from the MAIN screen to select the REGIST function. REGISTRATION BANK now appears at the top of the display screen.
  3. <TAB> to the location of your registrations folders, either CARD or USB1.
  4. Press the button next to the "-REG SENIORS" folder to select and open that folder.
  5. Page P1 will be displayed. If you have more than 10 registration files, you will see additional pages - P2, P3, P4. Select the page where the "--EMPTY" registration bank is located.
  6. Press the button next to "--EMPTY" to select (and highlight) that title.
  7. Press button [3] down to select the COPY function.
  8. Press button [7] down to select OK.
  9. Press button [6] down to select the SAVE function.
  10. Edit the "--EMPTY" name and change it to a new registration bank name, for example "--C1". You can name your registration files whatever you want.
  11. Press button [8] up to select OK and a copy of the renamed file is now saved.

You now have a new empty registration bank named "--C1".

C. Building a Registration using Music Finder

In the steps outlined here, you start building a registration file for a song by using the Yamaha Music Finder database to setup your keyboard for that song. Let's use the song "Misty" as an example.

  1. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.
  2. Press the [J] button from the MAIN screen to select the REGIST function. REGISTRATION BANK now appears at the top of the display screen.
  3. <TAB> to the location of the registrations folders, either CARD or USB1.
  4. Press the button next to the "--REG SENIORS" folder to select and open that folder.
  5. Select Page P1 or P2 or P3 or P4 where, for example, the "--M1" registration file is located.
  6. Press the button next to "--M1" to select and highlight the registration file "--M1".
  7. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen. You will see that the REGIST cell now has the "--M1" file listed.
  8. Press button [A] to select the appropriate song title for this registration.
  9. Press the button next to the song title you want to use thus selecting and highlighting this song title. Note: you previously created the song title in using the steps outlined in section "A" above.
  10. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen. You will see that the SONG cell has your song title displayed, in our example, "Misty".
  11. Now, let's find the Music Finder suggestion for Misty. Press the [Music Finder] button.
  12. Scroll through the song choices to find the Music Finder (MF) songs that start with the letter M and find "Misty". When you find the "Misty", or whatever song you are starting with, press the [ENTER] button to select the song. The song name will be highlighted and an appropriate style, intro, and tempo will be set.
  13. On your "song list" sheet, write down the registration file and memory button where you are going to save this keyboard setup ([RM1] – [RM8]). Let's say you are going to save this registration in [RM1]. Your song sheet might say "Misty - M1 - RM1".
  14. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.
  15. Press the [MEMORY] button (this takes a picture of the current keyboard settings). This places the keyboard settings into temporary memory.
  16. Press the song registration button number you selected from step 13 ([RM1]). This saves the keyboard settings in the RM1 button.
  17. Now you want to save the "--M1" registration file. From the MAIN display screen, press the [J] button to select REGIST and call up the REGISTRATION BANK display screen.
  18. Your currently selected registration bank name will be shown. Press button [6] down to select the SAVE function.
  19. A name will appear at the bottom of the display in the editing area. This is the name of the bank you are using, "-M1". Press button [8] up to select OK and a copy of the renamed file is now saved.
  20. The screen now displays a warning: Name Already exits --- Do you want to overwrite?
  21. Press the [F] button to select the YES answer.
  22. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.
  23. Press the registration memory button from Step 13 where you saved this registration.

Congratulations, the Music Finder settings are now in the registration you created. Play a little of your song. Stop, press that same registration memory button again. Take notice that the keyboard settings are set every time you press that button. You may still want to do a few more things like set the Transpose, maybe make some voice changes, pick a different style, or whatever you want to change for this song.

D. Magic Instructions … or Actually, Repeated instructions

The individual steps in the step-by-step instructions below are, you will find, very much repeated. The task instructions were written to be stand alone, so the repetition is necessary. As you walk through the various tasks, however, you can skip over the steps you don't need. Several tasks are provided where only 1 or 2 steps are different from other tasks. The basic steps in finding your registration folder, loading a registration file, selecting a song registration button, and saving a new or revised registration file are shown below.

Find "Your" registration Folder

  1. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.
  2. Press the [J] button to select the MAIN screen cell labeled REGIST. "REGISTRATION BANK" now appears at the top of the display screen.
  3. <TAB> to the location of "your" registrations folder(s), either CARD or USB1. For the example files, I have my registrations stored in a folder labeled "--REG SENIORS".
  4. Press the button next to the "--REG SENIORS" folder to select and open that folder. If you have your registrations stored in a folder with a different name, you would, of course, select and open that folder.

Your registrations folder will list your various registration files. You may name your registration file anything you like. The naming convention I use for my registration files is simple: two dashes and a letter followed by a number, for example, --A1, --B1, --C1,--C2, --D1, etc. The dashes are used to make sure these file names appear at the top of the list of filenames in the folder, which is always shown as an alphabetical list. The letter indicates the letter of the first word in the song title: "Apple Blossom Time" would be stored in "--A1", "Beyond the Sea" in "--B1". A single file can hold up to 8 songs, so if I have more than 8 songs for a given starting letter, a second registration file would be created, e.g. "--C1" and "--C2". I keep a separate song list that indicates the song title, the file that it is stored in, and the registration memory button (1 to 8) where the song is stored. To find the registration for an individual song, I need to have this song list handy. After the 4 steps referenced above, the following steps would then be used to find and load the registration file for a particular song.

Find and Load A Specific Registration File

  1. Viewing your list of registration files in your registration folder, press the button next to the particular registration file you want to load, for example, "--A1", " --C1, "--D2" etc. This highlights that registration file name and loads the registration file into memory.
  2. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen. You will see that the name of the registration file you selected now displayed in the REGIST cell in the MAIN display.

Select a Specific Song in the Registration File

  1. Refer to your song list to see which REGISTRATION MEMORY button holds the song you want. Press that button ([RM1], ..., [RM8]). If you have saved a "dummy" song file with each of these registration buttons, you can press each button and you will see the relevant song title in the SONG cell of the MAIN display.
  2. The settings stored in that registration button are now in effect on your keyboard and you can begin playing your song.

Alternatively, you can, at this point, make additional changes in your keyboard settings if you want to modify what you have for this song's setup. Individual task steps would vary at this point depending on what it is you are modifying.

Having made whatever changes you want to a given song's settings, you can now save these new settings in the appropriate RM button and then save the registration file containing that RM button. Follow these steps:

Save new version of song registration

  1. Press the [MEMORY] button, which is located to the right of the REGISTRATION MEMORY buttons.
  2. Press the REGISTRATION MEMORY button ([RM1], ... ,[RM8]) for the song you are modifying. This "saves" the new keyboard settings in the RM button, although the registration file itself is not yet saved.
  3. To save the altered registration file, press the [REGIST. BANK] button to call up the REGISTRATION BANK display screen.
  4. The currently loaded registration file will already be highlighted. Save the file by pressing the SAVE button, [6] down.
  5. The NAME box appears with the current registration file name shown. In this case, you do not want to change the name, so you would press the [8] up button to indicate that the displayed name is OK.
  6. You are then presented with a warning screen saying that the file already exists and asking if you want to overwrite the file. You do want to overwrite the file so you would press button [F] to indicate a YES response. The altered registration file, with your new settings for that song registration, is now saved in your registrations folder.
  7. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.

The point of covering these repetitive instructions is to show the true registration setups is the simplicity, once you have a little experience.

N. Copying or Duplicating Song Registrations

First of all, why copy? If you already have a registration setup you like for a particular song and want to use with another song, it is easier to Copy that registration then to create an entirely new registration from scratch. Also, you might want to move the song registration into a new registration bank file. You will need two things: (1) the location of the song registration you want to move or copy and (2) an empty registration bank spot to place it.

Find and Load A Specific Registration File

  1. Viewing your list of registration files in your registration folder, press the button next to the particular registration file you want to load, for example, "--A1", " --C1, "--D2" etc. This highlights that registration file name and loads the registration file into memory. Note that this will be the registration file where the song registration you want to copy is located.
  2. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen. You will see that the name of the registration file you selected now displayed in the REGIST cell in the MAIN display.

  1. Refer to your song list to see which REGISTRATION MEMORY button holds the song you want. Press that button ([RM1], ..., [RM8]).
  2. The settings stored in that registration button are now in effect on your keyboard and you can begin playing your song.

  1. If you are going to copy the current setting into another button in the current registration file, you can skip this step. If you want to put these settings into a different registration file, followe steps 5 and 6 above to load the second registration file.

Save Copy of Song Registration in RM Button

  1. Press the [MEMORY] button.
  2. Important -- do not press any RM buttons yet! You do not want to change any of the current keyboard settings. Now, press an EMPTY registration button where you want the copy of your song registration to be stored. This will put all of your current keyboard settings into that registration button.

Save registration File

  1. To save the altered registration file, press the [REGIST. BANK] button to call up the REGISTRATION BANK display screen.
  2. The currently loaded registration file will already be highlighted. Save the file by pressing the SAVE button, [6] down.
  3. The NAME box appears with the current registration file name shown. In this case, you do not want to change the name, so you would press the [8] up button to indicate that the displayed name is OK.

  5. Go to the MAIN screen by pressing the [EXIT] button until MAIN appears at the top of the display screen.

You may now play the new registration. You have just placed a copy into a new registration location. Now what? Well, for a brand new song, just add a song title in the appropriate area, maybe change the tempo, transpose, or other keyboard setups and you have a brand new complete registration for your new song.

0. Back Up All Registration Files

This is crucial for the health and safety of all of the work you have expended into creating and maintaining your registrations. You may spend hundreds of hours creating a large number of registrations. Now, make duplicate copies of your registrations and keep them safe at another location. The importance of this step can not be stressed enough.

The simplest way to make backups is to power down your keyboard. Move your USB stick from your keyboard to your computer and backup the entire USB stick to a folder on your computer. Done! I rename the USB backups with a date suffix, which helps keep thing straight.

The above lessons did not really cover creating and using registrations in your SMART MEDIA card. But, for PSR-3000 owners, the Smart Media card is an excellent place to create and use the your registrations. The steps will be exactly the same only your storage is to Smart Media (CARD) rather than USB. The SM card is almost like a part of the Keyboard. If you do use the SM card, the four folders (--REG SENIORS, --REG PADS, --REG SONGS, --REG STYLES) should be backed up to a USB stick. That is how I do my backups. Simply create identical folders on your USB stick, then go to each Reg folder and do a Copy ALL function. Next, move to the USB, open the appropriate folder, and then do a PASTE.
