« on: November 28, 2021, 07:21:06 PM »
Hi Folks,

I’m interested in the Yamaha Stagea ELC 02 keyboard, does anyone know if Genos styles and registration would work on this?

And would import duty be required in the UK.

many thanks

Colin

Hello Colin --

I just saw a picture of the Stagea ELC-02 and, man, is that a beautiful instrument! I would love to have that in my living room.  :)

So, I took a quick look at the manual. The manual is not super specific, but I think the ELC-02 uses the older SFF1 style format. Genos styles make extensive use of the Genos DSP effects and Revo drums and the second generation SFF2 (SFF GE) style format. Thus, I wouldn't expect Genos styles (specifically) to perform/behave correctly on the ELC-02. Same is probably true of registrations, I'm afraid.

Wish the news wasn't gloomy -- pj

Hello PJ,

Thank you for your information, to buy and import in to the UK is around £6500,  I'm very tempted.  Chris Stanbury in the UK plays one at concerts, he is magnificent, and makes the best of the machine.  I'd like to learn to play theatre style and this is ideal for that too.

Does anyone have any information for playing theatre style?

There are a few of us that teach theatre style playing, so lessons - live or on line - are the best way to go.

Tom Horton has done some great videos and publications on this style of playing. And remember that there are different styles of playing within 'theatre style'. 'Blackpool' is the one that many people think of. 'Old style British', like Sydney Torch, Robinson Cleaver etc, is another. The lush 'romantic theatre' style, like Jackie Brown, or the 'American' style, like George Wright, Buddy Cole, Billy Nalle, Ashley Miller and many others. There are a few books from the USA, look for ones by William McMains. Not easy at all, but worth the effort.

And you need an organ capable of creating theatre sounds, or use the organ to drive a virtual theatre organ.
It's not what you play, it's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

Alex Payler played a Stagea at this year's Yamaha Club weekend, and Elizabeth Harrison is now playing one.

Hi Colin,
You may have already heard of this company, but Taro's Trade Japan (https://www.tarotrade.com/) is one company in Japan who sell and ship Stagea ELC-02 to other countries.

They have been mentioned several times by people on Eldata.org who were buying music books from them, though they stopped doing this. I can't see any posts about buying an organ from him, so you would have to do your own research to see what the risks are and what service they provide.
