XG sounds in the SX900
« on: November 10, 2021, 06:50:56 PM »
I found the Legacy library on the SX-900 after quite a few searches.
Unfortunately I can't find the XG / GM & GM2 tones.
Does anyone know where they were hiding?

Only Yamaha probably knows that :-)
Watch the video and you will see how you can find them.

I wrote about this at the Yamaha headquarters as to why I can't find the XG sounds. I received this answer: "There might be a small misunderstanding. The XG-Voices are already build-in in your PSR-SX900.
They automatically get selected, whenever you play a MIDI-File, which is XG-compatible. These
files contain a message, which -so to speak- turns a part of the PSR-SX900 into a XG-soundmodule.
These Sounds are not directly available for manual playing, because most people regard
them as inferior to the PSR-SX900's Sounds. They have been solely implemented only for
song playback purpose."

The XG-Voices are indeed build-in in the PSR-SX900 but you can use them for more than just midi songs. You can access them as indicated in the previous posts and then use them in styles and as left/right voices. They might in general sound a bit inferior to the so called panel voices but with some DSP tuning, they can be quite nice and some of them are really complementary. You will for instance not find an ukulele in the panel voices of the SX700/900 which was a bit of a surprise to me since I had this voice even on my E463. But by accessing the XG voices, I now can use the ukulele voice also on my SX700 (although with a similar quite low quality as on the E463).
