tyros 5 data entry wheel fault
« on: June 11, 2021, 06:27:46 PM »
Hi I'm a newby to forums so not sure if this is in the correct position.
My data entry wheel has suddenly started to malfunction.  The fault shows by stopping and starting as the wheel is rotated then after a few minutes stops altogether. I have recently installed some new Genos Styles from Peter Mahl from the lessons section. I wonder if anyone has seen this effect before ?

Do you mean that nothing happens when you turn the wheel? Are you not able to scroll through the music finder entries?

Hi Toril S,

For a few seconds after switch on the date entry wheel tries to operate but soon stops altogether.  However one can scroll through the music finder by pressing the UP/Down 'Music'/ Style buttons.

It sounds like it is a mechanical fault with the wheel. But you could try a soft reset by holding down the rightmost key while powering on the keyboard. Your files will not be lost, but some settings will have to be done again. It could also be that you are turning the wheel too fast, so the keyboard has trouble keeping up. Just some suggestions :)

Hi
Done reset - Still not moving.  Same when rotated Slowly.
In fact it didn't even try to move after reset.  Don't know if its a heat related fault ?
Thanks for your thoughts anyway.

Sounds like the Tyros will have to go to the "hospital." You have my sympathy. Benn there, done that!

Just noticed that when the Data Entry is completely inoperative, If you press quite hard and rotate id does try to operate.  Maybe it is a mechanical issue after all !

just a quick update: I used an implement to apply sideways force to the data wheel (jiggled it) and it has started to work normally !

It seems to me like either a dry joint on the pot underneath, or some sort of mechanical problem.

I'm going to leave it for now.  If the fault returns I'll attempt to re-solder the pot joints after I learn how to take the tyros to bits !

Thanks again for all replies.
