Keyboard input ports
« on: March 07, 2021, 06:44:44 PM »
Dear friends,
after more than one year I've noticed that in the MIDI settings menu (MIDI receive)
the inputs can be recieved through the USB ports - in attachment the screenshot -

Does anybody tested a straight connection USB-USB from keyboard?
Does it work?

I'm asking because I'd like to connect a digital piano to the SX900, but it looks
like the MIDI ports are rarely present on recent models (e.g. Roland, Yamaha, Dexibell).

Thanks

Hi Simone1972,

external MIDI devices can be connected either using the DIN MIDI IN/OUT sockets or using the USB-to-HOST socket. The USB-to-DEVICE sockets cannot be used to connect external MIDI devices.

To connect an external MIDI keyboard that has only a USB-MIDI output you can use a so called "USB MIDI HOST" device in between (and use the DIN MIDI IN of the SX900):

Thanks Chris,
As usual very exhaustive response with a lot of value added.
As mentioned only high-end pianos are equipped with midi ports... I will include this midi device in the deal.

Hi

Maybe you will need my "MIDI Out Setter" software from http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/midiset/index.htm to control your configuration...

As Chris says, connecting the USB-B female port on the PSR directly to a USB-B female port on a MIDI keyboard with a dual USB-B male cable won't work.    Not because of the external MIDI keyboard USB port (although that might also be an issue)  but because the Yamaha PSR will not communicate with a keyboard through it's USB-B port.   Only to devices (tablets/computers)

I talked with Yamaha about this after trying to do a direct USB-B male to USB-B male cable connection and having no joy.

So the only way to do this is to use a MIDI convertor as per Chris's photo and access the PSR through the DIN port.

Interestingly, the Korg pa1000 now supports both devices and MIDI keyboards on their USB ports.     So it's not a hardware limitation.   It's just that Yamaha hasn't implemented the firmware for it.
