YEM error message concerning storage- possible solution
« on: January 09, 2021, 10:31:06 AM »
Finding:
when installing packs for Tyros5 from a friend on YEM
I got the error message about "... not enough space
or write protection ... " on the medium to be written.
However, there is nothing wrong with the storage medium, several
Tried USB Sticks and HDD.
I have encountered this problem repeatedly on various forums.
Sometimes it was a storage medium that was apparently not good.

In my case it was apparently due to some,
packs downloaded by my friend.
It took some time to filter out the "bad" packs
by loading pack per pack in YEM and each time the "PackInstal .." file
again until the error message occurred again.

Replaced these packs with downloads I previously made for myself
and now it is possible to create the "PackInstall" file in YEM
without error message.

Installed on my friend's Tyros5 and it works perfectly.
It concerns 20 packs from both Yamaha and third parties (approx. 1015 MB)

Conclusion:
not only incorrect storage media but also some packs (downloads) can
cause trouble.
Just because an error message apparently reports a problem doesn't mean it
cannot be anything else.

Too bad that YEM is not more specific in the error messages.

Hi Eddy,

immediately after Yamaha had offered all Packs free of charge in their download shop, various Packs were faulty and the error message you mentioned "... not enough space or write protection" on the medium to be written could appear.

The affected Packs have now been corrected by Yamaha. If this error occurs, I therefore recommend, as a precaution, simply download all the Packs you want from Yamaha again (and delete the earlier versions or no longer use them).

Fortunately, you no longer have to go the cumbersome way via the Yamaha download shop, but you can easily download the free Genos/T5 Premium Packs or the free PSR-S/SX Voice & Style Expansion Packs via direct links:

In some cases, YEM cannot overwrite correctly an existing Pack Install file on the USB stick. Therefore use either a blank or newly formatted stick, or delete at least all existing .ppi /.cpi /.pqi /.cqi files from the stick before saving a new Pack Install file to it. Make also sure that the stick has enough free memory space of course.

If you have problems with the YEM, I recommend looking into the YEM log file. Sometimes you will find a clue there.

The "Expansion Manager.log" file (a simple text file) is located in the YEM User folder. To open this folder (on Windows), open the "Run" dialog (press [Windows key] + R). There you enter the following (or copy it from here) and press the [Enter] key:

%LocalAppData%\Yamaha\Expansion Manager

Best regards,
Chris

Thank you Chris,
for the useful information, will certainly come in handy.
I especially wanted to report that the YEM error messages
are not always accurate and that sometimes it pays to
to look further than the message implies.
Thanks to you now I know where to look (Expansion Manager.log)

I ran into this problem today "... not enough space
or write protection ... "

I've tried reinstalling YEM (and also deleting the files in  C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Yamaha\Expansion Manager).

I finally unchecked  all but a few files and created the full pack, then checked a few more files and created the pack.

It doesn't appear to be a particular pack that causes it because I've done it in a different order and the next pack I choose causes the error. I can uncheck the pack that just caused the error and I still get the error.

It seems like I've exceeded some threshold and I get the error.

I have plenty of room in Voice Wave, Parameter, and Install Size. I've re-downloaded packs.

I've spent several hours trying to get this to work, so if anyone has further ideas please let me know.

EDIT: As an update I may have found the pack that was causing the trouble. It was one I did not download from my Yamaha account. After downloading it again, I was able to add more packs to the install file.

Thanks
Kevin
