Hi hornimans135,

to format a USB flash drive press [Menu] > Utility > Storage. See also the attached picture. (It's a screenshot from the SX900 Reference Manual, page 130.)

But usually it is not needed to format a USB flash drive directly on the keyboard. If a new USB flash drive is already formatted in "FAT32" format, you can use it without re-formatting. If the flash drive has a different format (e.g. "exFAT"), you can also re-format it to "FAT32" on your Computer.

On the other hand, of course, it does not "harm" if you format a flash drive directly on the keyboard.

Note: Make sure that you don't accidentally format the internal User drive!

... and which one is best for the instrument.

Most USB flash drives will work properly on the SX900. There is also a list of USB flash drives tested on SX900 by Yamaha:

Best regards,
Chris

➪ Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that and just did it.
➪ Never put the manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

I find the Kingston flash drives very reliable.

On my SX900 I use Verbatim Store N USB 32 Gb. They are very small so do not stick out so no fear of getting knocked and also fast so ideal for Audio recording.
