syncing DAW with PSR Style in 6/8 time
« on: June 12, 2020, 04:34:59 AM »
Hi,

I'm running Cubase 10.5. my arrangement in Cubase is in 6/8 with the tempo set to 180 quarters per minute. I would like to play my arrangement along with a style that is in 6/8 but it shows in PSR as 4/4.

I'm trying to sync the Yamaha PSR synth to Cubase.

This is what I have done:

Set the midi clock on PSR to USB 1 Port 1( my connection to computer)

on Cubase, Transport menu>Project Synchronization Setup>MIDI Clock Out> PSR Port 1.

I have PSR slaved to Cubase.

When I play Cubase, it plays with tempo 3/2 faster than expected. Is there a way to send the tempo out of Cubase 2/3 of the actual tempo? I wish there was an output transformer. Is there a way to sneak in tempo right after Cubase sends the tempo to my PSR?

I tried

"How to change a style’s beat from 4/4 to 6/8
To change from 4/4 to 6/8, the settings in Digital Recording/StyleCreator/ Groove use the
settings: Original Beat:16 Beat converter:12 "

However, it did not work!

Can someone help me, please? :)

Hi Chtikin, I don't know if I understand your problem right and if it is helpful, but have you considered to add a tempo-track in Cubase?

Hi, Thank you for the response. Yes, I have added it. I have arranged a full section in Cubase with a tempo track ( with tempo changes). It plays perfectly with the desired tempo however, when I play it along with PSR style, their tempos are different by a factor of 3 like I said.

I can make the notes' durations longer one by one ( not too hard) in Cubase but then my score ( notation) will get messed up.

If I could have a virtual cable, and program it before reaching the input port to change the tempo the factor 2/3, that would do that.

Hi chikitin,
maybe if you use Mixmaster or Style time editor or Style Time and Tempo in Name you can be able to re-save and show the style on the psr as a 6/8 and not as 4/4 and now Cubase and Psr tempo can be synchronized?

I think there is a "midi command" something that has to ne added to the style to show the style and be read by the psr as a 6/8 style and not as a (default) 4/4 style.

Thank you. I guess I am getting somewhere.

The thing is that in Cubase I have 120 quarters per second and mot beat per minute ( which is dotted-quarter note per minute). On the other hand, On PSR, my factory Style is in 6/8. Although it say in 4/4) it is ( style creator doesn't have 6/8).

I think what I need to do it, importing the style to Cubase, change note duration by 3/2, and then use CASM editor to save it back to a new style.

You have to use real 6/8 styles or make the song in the dawn 4/4.
Record the song with the (6/8 style in 4/4 ) and make the song later 6/8
to get the right score etc..

Try my modified styles  from the Genos in real 6/8.

Thank you very much. I will give it a shot! How did you modify all these, if I may ask, please?

I am using a factory style and it should have been recorded in 6/8 ( or when talking to another system), but not sure why it is not!
