My honest advice is to go for the tyros. The professional keybed quality is  the main reason for a beginner.

Hi windywoo,
Tyros 2 is using an SFF1 (old format) styles.
Psr s970 is using an SFF2 (newer format) styles.
Newer styles can be converted to the old format but many voices of the style parts won't work and need to be replaced or deleted (no matter what voice you will choose a style part will not sound good so you just delete it).

This job was made here by people for the Tyros 2 users:
https://psrtutorial.com/sty/yamaha/Tyros2/tyros_2.html

You have to be careful that the Tyros 2 is still working good.
The good thing is that keyboards, as all electronics, used to be more expensive 15 years ago so the quality of the materials was better.

Hi windywoo,

on Tyros2 you can only use the OLD Style File Format "SFF" (also called "SFF1").

The NEW Style File Format "SFF GE" (also called "SFF2") was introduced with Tyros3 and PSR-S910.

All Preset styles from current keyboards and most styles from third-party manufacturers are in the SFF2 format, i.e. they cannot be played on T2. :(

There is a software program to convert SFF2 styles to SFF1, but after that you have to make various manual changes to the style in most cases.

The Tyros2 definitely has a much better keyboard than PSR-S models, and the T2 is still a very good instrument. But as mentioned, it is not compatible with the current Style File Format.

In addition, the T2 came onto the market in 2005, so it can now be up to 15 years old. As a result, the risk of a larger defect occurring is greater than with "younger" instruments. And it can therefore quickly lead to "total economic damage" if a hardware defect occurs.

Edit:
ooops, panos was quicker ... ;)

Best regards,
Chris

➪ Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that and just did it.
➪ Never put the manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

Tyros 3 is still a very good keyboard but I think £950 is a little on the high side. I would be thinking around £800.

Hi,

my opinion is, that the S970 is a very modern keyboard. I used it for some year, and I like it very much.

The only disadvantage is the keybed. But as I said: it worked for me several years.

windywoo. I had T2 for 12 years...like T3 both great keyboards.
Tyros models have a good quality KEYBED which makes a better playing experience.

What are the disadvantages of the s970 keybed? Are earlier or later PSR series much better?

I own both the tyros 2 and s970. Even though the S970 has never voices and the tyros 2 is around 10 years difference. Toe, the sound of tyros 2 (and other tyros models) the sound is less brittle. I have tried many settings eq different speakers, but tyros 2 I have gives a warm and realistic sound especially on strings. S970 the drums are better. I am convinced that tyros models use higher quality samples than PSR models. Something about them. Modern music PSR s970 (symths, dance etc)
