T5 and the expansion module.
« on: April 28, 2020, 09:41:13 PM »
Hello friends.
My T5 has no expansion module, so I can't use expansion packs on it. I wonder, if I buy the largest module, will i then be able to load several packs? I also wonder if there still are good packs for T5? I am into pop, dance music (not EDM), but rather tango, foxtrot, waltz and such. The reason for fitting my Tyros with the module is that I want to update it a little. Is it worth it (the module is rather expensice!). Will be grateful for some advice about this.

As far as I know the biggest expansion memory module available for Tyros 5, is 2GB.
The most common is the 1 GB, according my knowledge.

Most Yamaha Expansion Packs are no more than 100Mb each, so in this case you can fit +/- 10 expansion packs on a 1 GB memory chip and +/- 20 expansion packs on a 2 GB memory module.

I see 3rd parties expansion packs (expansion packs from other independent creators, not affiliate with Yamaha itself)  which are more heavy and some of them extremely heavy (up to 800 Mb or even 1 GB).
So if you can't find what you want on the Yamaha music Store and you have to purchase it from independent 3rd party creators, you mast pay attention on the size of the packs you like.
I have in my collection very interesting soundpacks with size no more than 150-200 MB each so I think that with a 1 GB module you can have at least 4-5 different expansion packs simultaneously on you Tyros 5.

Hi Toril,

the Tyros5 uses the same Expansion Pack technology (in conjunction with the Yamaha Expansion Manager / YEM) as e.g. Genos, PSR-Sx7x and PSR-SX models.

Of course, you can also install MULTIPLE Expansion Packs on the Tyros5 at the same time. I recommend buying at least a 1GB module, ideally the 2GB module from "MUTEC" (if the budget allows it).

Since the Tyros5 only has ONE slot for the expansion memory, it cannot be expanded later. So you have to replace the module completely if you need more memory later.

Packs from third-party providers or free packs such as from www.cms-sounddesign.de often require a relatively large amount of memory. You can also use Voices in Tyros3 / 4 format (UVN / UVD) or Soundfont format (SF2) at any time. Here, too, there are many voices available free of charge on the Internet. Therefore, it is always better to have the largest possible memory. :)

Best regards,
Chris

➪ Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that and just did it.
➪ Never put the manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

Yamaha are able to condense there pack sizes but third party producers are not so they are usually much bigger.

I went to my store to order a module today, but they only had the smallest, and even that costs 2000 NOK. The biggest is NOK 4000! That scared me off for now. I am not a big user of packs yet, and I have the Genos, so I will see...

Toril, it is difficult to see why are you even considering spending time and money on Tyros expansion memory when you can already enjoy the much larger and built in expansion memory of the Genos, if expansion packs are what you need.  ;)
