USB not recognized on start up.
« on: April 15, 2020, 02:09:54 PM »
Hi Guys,

Occasionally when I turn on my Genos, the USB does not show up on the screen. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it recognizes it, and works properly. This happens with the front port and the rear port. Does anyone know what causes this?

Thanks,
Rick D.

When you use the usb port to much it gets worn out
Try a short male female extencion cable
The extension cable stays in the usb port
And when the extencion get worn out replace it
That is cheaper than repear your keyboard

Janus,

I have used an extension cable for 4 Tyros’s and now the Genos. As stated in the original post, this happens with both the front port and the rear port. Normally I never remove mine, only to bring files from my desktop, until I started having this problem.

Thanks,
Rick D.

Try the usb pen on the computer
When you get the same fault then it is the usb pen
Try to clean the usb pen port en cable ports

only to bring files from my desktop

That's why I much prefer USB Storage Mode (PowerOn + Playlist). Saves all the wear and tear on the USB port.

Janus,
The stick works fine in my computer, and in the Genos after removing and reinstalling. I should have mentioned that this Genos is only a few months old.

Fred,
Could you explain that method please.
Mind you my computer, is no where near my Genos.

Thanks Guys,

Rick D.

The method is to connect the keyboard to your computer with a standard printer cable. You go from the USB-to-host port on the back of the keyboard, to any USB port on the computer. When you power on holding down the Playlist button, the keyboard goes into "USB Storage Mode" (don't ask why they use this term). But it means that the Genos User drive looks like an external hard drive to the computer, and you can use File Explorer to to move/copy/delete files on the keyboard.

However, given your second sentence, this option might not be practical for you.

Cheers,

Hi Rick,

does this problem only occur with ONE certain USB stick?

If this is the case, the first thing I would do is reformat this stick on the Genos. (Back up important data on the computer beforehand, of course.)

Best regards,
Chris

Fred,
My computer, is 30 ft from my Genos. I used to have a laptop for my music only but it is too old. I have been thinking about replacing it,  this may be the kick in the butt I need.

Overover,
I actually ordered another stick, I will let you know, how that goes.
In the meantime I will empty the stick onto my desktop and reformat it in the Genos again.

Thanks to you both.

I reformatted the stick in the Genos, loaded all the files back on it from my computer, and put it in the Genos. It worked for the first power up. Let's see what happens down the road.
Maybe it went stupid? LOL

Thanks again,

Rick D.

Esa,

I have the same setup, only I have mine strapped to the side of the stand leg, so it isn't flopping around.

You  can get shorter  extensions which are less cumbersome. You could consider using the rear usb socket if available which would enable a neater routing maybe even under the keyboard to the front if preferred.

Update.

Got a new stick, and so far it works fine. Even after the format, my old one would only get recognized some of the time. Not sure what went wrong with it, it is not that old. It is a PNY brand.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

It sometimes happens. I have a Sandisk USB stick that used to work fine on the keyboard. But one day the keyboard would not have it. In the computer it worked fine. Tried to format it on the keyboard, but got an error message. Just one of the mysteries of the data world I guess!

Sometimes you should just throw away such USB sticks that cause such problems (even if this only happens sometimes). In this way, you can prevent future data loss due to a total failure of the stick.

Not using the Sandisk stick any more, but am very curious as to what happened. The format of the stick is still FAT32 as it should be, and it works on the computer, but not on the keyboards. The keyboard AND the computer says it can not be formatted. Guess I will never know what went wrong. I have found that Kingston sticks are very reliable.

I am having a similar issue. After 2 years of so, the usb connection from Genos to computer,  loses contact. It usually works fine on start up, but at some point, momentarily loses contact.  The computer issues a warning, and will not work until you hit ok, and then fiddle with cable.  Often I have to restart Kenos,  I have to jiggle it to get it back.   I take a small sliver of paper hold it against usb plug. That tightens the contact, and makes more solid.

25 years ago, computer manufactures used 'military spec' jacks and plugs.  (guaranteed to be exactly the right size)  they switched to cheaper hardware, so as a result, some jacks, plugs, are ever to slightly larger, smaller.  I've had this happen to two macs, since the 90's (new computer every 3 years).

You might try a different usb cable, or do the sliver of paper thing.  Mine has become quite bad now,  every 2 - 6 hours, it looses connection.  A disaster if you were performing live.

Two new SansDisk 32 gig sticks did the trick.
I have one in front, with a cable, and one in back, that I never remove.

Thanks,
