SX900/700 expansion pack styles
« on: February 26, 2020, 08:27:33 PM »
Hi from the Genos area!

I was wondering if I could interest anyone in a little "cultural exchange"?!

I'm hoping to get hold of a copy of the bundled expansion pack styles from the SX900 or SX700 - in particular the African styles - to play on my Genos.

As a gesture of hopefully commensurate value, here's an export of the Genos "superior" pack styles:

Many thanks to anyone who can help :)

hello andy,
You can download these packs from Yamaha:
https://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/musical_instruments/keyboards/arranger_workstations/psr-sx700/vse.html#product-tabs

-they're only available as cpf (means locked).. to load them into YEM, you'd need instrument info(.n27) file for SX, I think...

Thanks Bogdan,

I found a PSR-SX900 instrument file in the main set of styles posted here:
https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,51228.msg400732.html#msg400732
But because the African etc free expansion packs for the SX900 are encrypted CPFs, as far as I can see there's no way to export their content from YEM...

...unless I'm missing something? Which I'm sure is quite possible!

It's tantalising as I can see the individual "High Life", "Afro Beat" etc styles listed - I just can't see a way to export them.

Actually there is a way to extract styles from a pack in YEM with YEM Content Explorer

Hi Joe H - do you mean there is a way to export styles from CPFs in YEM Content Explorer? I've tried and can't find it.

It's possible you can't do it with cpf files because of the copy protection.  If that's the case maybe your only option is to install the styles and one at a time... Select a style, open Style Creator, then SAVE to your USB drive.  You will have to do this for each style.

Yes I think so. Hence I'm relying on some other kind soul to do that on their PSR-SX for 'the greater good'!

hi Andy,
Here you can download African styles from my web server:
http://digi-life.synology.me/share/

Of course, voices in pack aren't there. But there are only 3 (drum-kit) voices, which are used only in first three styles: for Rhythm1 and in OTS (R3 keybed). I hope that is of some help for you.

PS: I will remove above content after few days.

There are some really nice styles in that set!

The styles which ought to feature the pack kits still sound great without them - the notes on the affected channel seem to map quite well to the Genos cuban or latin kits, except for some sort of metronomic element in the afrobeat style (but that still sounds lively and interesting without that whole track anyway).
There are definite shades of Graceland to the High Life 2 style; shame it's a "one bar wonder", but there are still some good ideas in there that could be expanded to make a more varied arrangement.

Thanks again Bogdan!

Hi Andy,

Now I feel kinda embarrassed..  to tell the truth, I didn't pay much (if any) attention to African pack -I need to give it a second chance in next days, I guess.
I'm happy I could be of some help  :)

I think Yamaha must have recognised that they really hadn't paid much attention to it themselves recently!
So they commissioned this rather impressive chap to give them a bit of a jump start in this area:

It's funny because I'm sure I remember there being more African-inspired presets way back on my original PSS-480 (or was it the PSR-400?!) than there seem to be on the Genos!

The video is very good, but very short. I wanted to hear more.

Yep, I tried African pack (again), and.. just my opinion, ok?  :)
As we can see on video that Andy posted, pack is actually emphasized on those three drumkit voices, which are presented as pure drums and how they can be used in some jazzy/groove music -which isn't that interesting for broad audience, though.
I would prefer something that goes more toward African folk music. But then, there should be included at least one or two African choir voices.
Agree Enildo, that guy seems to manage keyboard very well, no doubt about that! Too short?.. well.. (see above), I guess there isn't much more to be shown from that pack  :-\

For those who are interested: first three styles are using "AfricanBigKit" voice in Rhythm1. The best replacement for it is "ArabicKit2" which I've found in Legacy/DrumKit on SX700. Difference between these two (as used in those three styles) is very small and can be easily adjusted with EQ (by enhancing lower frequencies just a bit).

Yes - I'd say they've made a welcome start with these but there's a lot more they could do. A new choir is a good idea - how about a Ladysmith Black Mambazo ensemble voice and kit voice?!
Strangely enough, I can't find the "ArabicKit2" you recommended, on my Genos - but the "ArabicKit" does work fairly well, so thanks for the tip... I need to write a note on my hand to keep checking the "legacy" section for things!

hi Andy
Just checked.. ArabicKit on Genos, and ArabicKit2 on SX have the same MSB-LSB-PCn numbers -means, it's the same voice  :)
