I have bought the yamaha sub to add to my sx900. what changes to the settings do i have to make, or do i just plug it in??

Hi,
If you just plug in you should hear a very deep-loud sound.
You must change the MASTER EQ settings:
In the default list, select "with subwoofer".
Manually adjust the volume knob on the back based on your taste and enjoy.

I did mention in a previous article.

For a cleaner bass performance (not Boom) lift the Sub-Bass a few inches off the floor 12" ? and away from room corners.

I use "Rob QR Settings" and it sounds great with my Yamaha Sub. Remember you can set the Sub volume to your preference.
