Microphone Distortion When Recording
« on: January 27, 2020, 01:35:43 PM »
Attempting to record some videos to post to Youtube.
When I play live, I go directly to my QSC K12's and have no distortion with my vocals at any volume.
When recording video, I go from my MAIN outputs, on Genos, directly into my camera.
The Camera is a Canon VIXIA HF R300 and has a 3.5mm input jack for a microphone.
If I try and sing close to the microphone, or turn up the microphone volume on the Genos, I get distortion.
The sounds from the Genos, I can play louder then my voice, but will eventually distort also.
Can the answer be in my compressor settings or equalizer settings?
My compressor is currently set to PUNCHY, and my EQ is using settings very close to EQ GOLD.
Any help will be much appreciated.

lower the audi out on the genos
check the mic input on te genos is to strong seen by the red led
when the mic input is good dont change it any more
change the audio output on the genos in balance with the mic
after that balance the input on the camera

the best is an externe mixer genos and the mic to a external mixer, mixer out to the camera

The problem is not with the Genos setting (EQ, COMP), but rather that you are connecting inputs with different sensitivity levels. The microphone input on the Canon camera is hypersensitive to the signal level coming from the Genos.

I don't use the camera for sound recording
not the best quality
Better record the sound in the genos as wave file Export it to a computer
And with software put both together Video and Audio

Janus's recommendation will yield much better sound quality, and eliminate a lot of issues that may be unique to each camcorder brand or model.

Also, note that it's very easy to sync sound and video if you load the separately-recorded sound (mic and/or music) track alongside the camera's built-in mic track. So don't ignore the camera's audio track, even if it sounds inferior. During post-production, when you listen to both the camera and mic tracks together, you'll hear a distinctive spacey flanging effect until they are in perfect sync. Headphones make this even easier to discern. Then, of course, just mute the camera audio track. So there's no need to get into SMPTE time codes, etc., to achieve perfect sync between video and separately recorded sound.

when you use software on a computer it is very easy to bind the both together
you can shuffle the tracks by hand
use your eyes and ears  to search the right stand it works perfect
I use magic video de luxe software for the job
There is also a great audio mixer to add effects and transpose the audio
also very easy to add tekst and lyrics all done by mouse
And you can upload the video with the software to youtube
And use the computer for store the recordings on a hd
The best a usb one to use it as backup or use on other hardware

Yes, I've heard good things about Magic Video. They have some great graphics software, too.

I've been using Sonar (formerly Cakewalk, and now recently Cakewalk by Bandlab, at $0.00) since it was a DOS program in the 1990's. It's still a very powerful and capable DAW, but it's probably too complex and elaborate for what the OP was doing. Magic would be a good choice.

I got the tyros 5
when i connect a headphone the audio is disconnected
There is one solutie to elimate feedback from the keyboard on the mic
Use an external mixer or daw with headphone and monitor functie
You can hear the mix on the headphone and the keyboard is silence
Gives better sound

The problem is the result of impedance imbalance between the two systems. This can often be solved with an impedance matching transformer, but not always because there may be too much signal loss between the two systems.  Try using the headphone out from the keyboard, which is a different impedance than the main out of the keyboard. This could solve your problem.

Also, be sure to run your input volume at 60 to 70 percent, which will reduce some of the distortion as well.

Good luck,

Thank you all for your suggestions.
There are several things I will try.

Question- If I use Magix Movie Edit, Do I load both the wave file from the Genos, and the video from the camera, and then sync them both together?
And is it easy to sync them?

The easiest way is recording realtime
Then you need a videograbber ,You can find them in usb
Connect the video output from the camero to the usb video
Connect the Genos with the audio in from the computer
Then you can make a realtime recording audio and vidio
And is is also possible to use you Webcam or other usb camara's
look for a good one hdmi qualty
to make multi recordings
like picture in picture
Or you make recordings in the Genos and video camera and import them in magic
There is space enough there are 128 tracks to fill
Great fun are animated gifs you can find them on the interne
that is a row of pictures playing as a video file in a loop
like a midi pad in a keyboard

Hre a sample of a animated gif
When you use it you dont see the player
there are 10 gifs in a row
There also animated gif makers to make your own

I just tried some different settings on Genos.
I had compressor at punchy and eq at EQ gold.
Changed compressor to NATURAL and eq to BRIGHT.
Vast improvement.

Noticed only my vocal distorts on any setting, the keyboard playing does not.
So the problem is with the microphone it seems.
I do have a condenser microphone I can try.

I just tried using my Shure SM81 condenser microphone and what a difference it made!
I was able to give it more volume and did not distort.
I was using a shure SM58 mike before.
