considering buying a site unseen used tyros4
« on: January 25, 2020, 02:35:28 PM »
considering buying a site unseen used tyros4.
will only have a short time to see if it works.
I assume there is no self test feature built in.
other than pressing every key is there a good way of determining if everything works?
as a tyros 4 it will be 6 to 10 years old. are they usually unreliable?
Are parts available?
are they usually repairable?
Is it the sort of thing that would be taken on the road by bands?

it is about the same price as a new PSR-S975 or PSR SX900

anything else i need to ask?

thanks all

If it’s the same price as a new SX900, then buy the SX.

I hesitate because a big black thing in the room would look terrible!
silver is nicer.
not the best of reasons and i may well follow your advice

If you must have it in silver, then I would go for the Tyros 5. Newer, and you can use Yamaha Expansion Manager. But Tyros 5 is from 2013, so beginning to have some years on its back.

I still use the psr 9000 pro the best keys adapted from the el piano line
Why there are stopt with this line ?
modulles with mega en sa voices coul hold it up to date
Also with software updates

Firstly the Tyros 4 may not be the newest arranger but it at the time it was a Top Of The Line Arranger, and you can get a great sound from it. But if you haven’t tested it I’d be a little weary as if the has any faults repair can be very costly. It you take a leap of faith and it all works fine you will have a decent enough arranger. That’s my take on this.

As we're at a Yamaha user forum, we have seen many examples that to mention other brands here, is pretty close to swear loud in the church.  ;D ;D

If you have a chanse to visit a musicstore to try different models that's the best starting point, but it's also lots of videos at YT to compare visually and to listen at.
Yamaha and Korg is different animals, and what's best is very personal and subjective. The Korg has a bit more complex user OS than Yamaha, but it's a learning curve.
Some prefer Korg because of a more soft sound, and others prefer Yamaha's more crisp and CD'ish sound.

If you're familiar to Yamaha OS, it's probably the easiest choice. You started out with a question about T4 versus PSR.
T4 is rather old now. The SX900 is pretty new and will have factory warrany and most likely more updates and aditions to come. It's a kind of 'Baby Genos' and it also has speakers.
So has Korg PA1000, but that one has been on the market for some time and probably going to be replaced within not too long time .....

I think you'll be happy whatever brand to chose. It's all a matter of personal taste, desire and needs.
Here at this forum lot of members is ready to help you if you need help, and there is a Korg forum with lots of helpful members as well. I don't think you can get wrong with either one.

Good luck, and happy playing! 👍
Cheers 🥂

The Tyros was pretty reliable, but it’s the same risk as buying a used car. Was it well looked after, does it have low miles etc. Unless it’s really cheap I don’t think I would buy sight unseen in either case - car or keyboard.

I actually  bought  a second hand  T4 privately just before Xmas, it looked in really good condition, I tried  every key & spent a lot of time checking most things that I could, luckily  for me I haven't  had any faults with the keyboard, but depending  on the price you would be paying, the SX900 would be a better buy if you needed some assurance, also you would  get warranty. I have the Genos, but I also think the Tyros4  still sounds really great. :-*

I meant to add that I wouldn't  pay any more than £1,000 for a second hand Tyros4  unless it comes with 12 month's  warranty. :) That is a reasonable  price for an older keyboard, paying anymore than that without warranty is expensive  for the age.

The Tyros4 is the best keyboard ever made. I bought the PSR SX900 and then tried to sell it - no one wants it. It may as well go in the bin. I have the T4 the PSR S770 and the SX900.
Remember, if it is the only keyboard that you have and you have paid out lots of money then; first you have no comparison, secondly you are reluctant to admit you have bought a lemon. Lots of people have bought the Genos and the SX900 and seem to be very happy with them. Sound is a matter of opinion.
If you want to hear how awful the SX900 sounds, this is something I posted before I got my new hearing aids.

Well Denn,
I saw nothing wrong with your song. The sound quality was fine. The choice of voices were yours but worked well.
A this present time with all the virus worries people are not thinking of buying keyboards. It dose not mean no one want's them and that you have to throw them in the bin. You are being a little harsh there on what is a very good keyboard and much more up to date than Tyros 4.
Let us know what bin you are throwing it in.

SX is a good keyboard.
Not a genos or Tyros for a Flagship feel
But still better than a S975.

Also T4 is way outdated if it was T5 for the same price then we could have had a 2nd thoughts.

I have a Tyros 4 and am very happy with it. I never considered to go with the hype and buy every new keyboard that comes out like many of my co musicians here.
Like most say, it's a question of choice.
I have so many styles and voices that I have collected over the years and together with a good DAW I can literally make any sound possible.
Yes, of course, there are newer keyboards with probably better sounding voices and more options, but I'm not a performer.
I just play and have fun by myself and occasionally a family member so I guess I don't need more.
Or maybe I'm just not willing to put out thousands of dollars for the latest gig.

It's up to you. As I stated, I love my Tyros 4. It does everything I want and more. And each time I play, I find more ways to change the sound or style and just dream away.

Good luck with your choice!

There is a major shortcoming with the T4... the audio from the Audio Aux input cannot be recorded to the Audio WAV Recorder. If this is not an issue, then disregard this fact.

From the Manual:

The following sounds can be recorded.
• Internal sound of the Tyros4 (Keyboard parts (Right 1, Right 2, Right 3, Left), Multi Pad,
Song parts, Style parts)
• Input from a microphone (via the [MIC] jack)

I think this is the only arranger since the T3 (which has stereo mic/line inputs instead of an Aux Audio input jack)  that will not record the Aux Input

9 months ago I purchased from Retail T5-76 with 12 months Warranty less price than SX900

The T5 has things I need like After-Touch and excellent keybed and good solid buttons  which the SX does not have.

Hi Anon.
I still gig with my Tyros 4 which i have owned for many years, Personally i will never change as it does all what i need and my dancers comment from time to time how it sounds so much like a big band or orchestra. Mind you playing it through my Bose tower speaker really helps!
Thanks to other members who have "kindly" uploaded many converted styles from other Yamaha models, I have some of them on the Tyros 4 which work a treat. I tried both Tyros 5 and Genos models but decided to keep with my trusty Tyros 4!
Good luck with your decision.

Not on topic, but related

Like you I use the T4 since it was new.
I am concerned about availability of parts for it. Years back I replaced something in it... maybe the motherboard!  It costed under $300 i think.

Anyway... any thoughts on parts availability? I have heard Yamaha is the best with parts, but still it is no longer mandated that they supply parts for a T4.

Related to that  I saw a used T4 today in a store.
It looked a lot less played than mine... all buttons worked smoother than mine.

Wondering about buying it... price was 2300 dollars.

Thoughts?
Thanks

Wow  Toril,  I am digging the whole pedigree of little Yamaha's in your family!

I asked this question earlier

Leaving out the fact  that each new revision   eg  T2  T3  T4  Genos... you pay more for more stuff ( larger number of sounds, beats, capacity etc... the old advertisement "Bigger Better")

But putting on your hat as a musician who perhaps grew up on accordion, or organ or piano or synth, or even a horn

Do you truly prefer each new model as you shell out more money?
In other words  is the acoustic piano, if played solo...is it really preferable in Genos form than earlier Tyros forms ?

I am not convinced,  but Ive only played Genos in a store.

Thanks again

Good for you... sticking to T4

But I tend to worry.  Are you concerned about lack of parts, should a replacement part be needed??

I had the HD replaced and a motherboard
