O come, all ye faithful
« on: December 15, 2019, 04:40:04 PM »
Dear friends

Of all the Christmas carols this song reaches the top for me ... majestic and triumphant. The song has been attributed to various authors, including John Francis Wade (1711–1786), John Reading (1645–1692), King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656), and various anonymous monks"! The earliest printed version is in a book published by Wade, but the earliest manuscript bears the name of King John IV, and is located in the library of the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa. A manuscript by Wade, dating to 1751, is held by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. The original four verses of the hymn were extended to a total of eight, translated into many languages. The English translation of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" was made by the English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley in 1841...

Torben, your own description of this song also describes your arrangement and performance..."majestic and triumphant."  You've always accomplished wonders with your arranger keyboards!

Yes . . . , if the cathedral organ and choir was not enough to evoke wonder in the listener, the brass and  percussion certainly did and lent a majestic feel to the recording.  Amen !!!

This is also one of my favorite Christmas songs, and I really like how it builds from the brass to the choir.

Wow, that was brilliant Torben! That sounded fit for a royal occasion - maybe you could send it to Queen Elizabeth to use as music for her Queen’s Speech this year?!

Nicely thought out Torben, I enjoyed listening to each moment it brought back memories when I played in the brass band at this time of year.
