Using the digital output on Genos for audio recording
« on: November 24, 2019, 03:48:52 PM »
Hi,

I've have an audio interface with a coax S/PDIF input that I have been using to record audio from Genos.
While the result is very clean, I have noticed that the output level is quite low comparing to using the analogue inputs.
There is no gain control on my audio interface for the S/PDIF connection, so I cannot adjust the input signal there, but maybe that is common for digital inputs?
On the Genos there is an option to boost the signal +12 DB, but even then the signal is quite weak and not close to 0db on my DAW.
I can always use a maximizer plugin when mastering the track, but I am just curious on how you others do?

The next question is about vocal recordings. If I want to use Genos vocal effect when I record to my DAW, what would be the recommended way to do this?
Connect the Microphone to Genos and send the vocals over the digital output to my DAW
or should I import my audio track to Genos and record the vocals in the internal audio recorder?

Thanks

Yes, the digital output is extremely low.  The analog output is extremely clean, so i use that.

I usually use Logic Pro's 'Normalize' function after recording the very low signal. It brings the signal up, yet is still a very 'not noisy' output.

You can adjust the digital output Level in Utility in the Speaker/Connectivity  page

Thanks for the confirmation. I have also set mine to +6db boost and I used the maximizer plugin in Cubase to get the desired level. All good without any noise. I had some noise issue before with my Yamaha AG06 interface, so that's why I wanted to try recording digital.

Any thoughts about vocal recording? Are you recording directly into the audio interface or are you using the MIC input on Genos?
