Question about PSR-E363 /463 USB to Host
« on: November 08, 2019, 08:42:52 AM »
The PSR-E363 / 300 and PSR-E463 / 410  documentation explain that USB to host can transmit audio and midi to a computer or Ipad.

Is this also available in the other direction, from Ipad / computer to PSR-E ?

So if I use an app like Igrand or Ravenscroft275,  can I plug my Ipad only on the usb to host ? ; is the tones generated by the app directly injected in the amplifier of the PSR-E via the USB cable or should I have to also connect the Ipad headphone jack to the keyboard audio-in with a 3.5mm cable ? is there latency ?

Yamaha manual is not very clear on this subject

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about Audio

But Midi should go Both Ways.

Hi dogeno,

first of all: To connect a Yamaha Keyboard that has a built-in USB AUDIO interface (like the PSR-E363/E63 models), you have to use the USB-to-HOST terminal of the Keyboard (NOT the USB-to-Device terminal).

If you connect to a (Windows) PC (via a "USB type AB" cable), the "Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver" should be installed on the Computer (NOT the "Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver"!):

https://usa.yamaha.com/support/updates/index.html?c=keyboards&k=psr-e463

MAC Computers may NOT require a special Driver (although there is one to download).

To connect an iPad with Lightning port, I recommend to use the Apple "Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter" (and a "USB type AB" cable):

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter

A newer iPad, with USB C port, you can connect via either an Apple "USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter" OR an Apple "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter":

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1L2AM/A/usb-c-vga-multiport-adapter
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MUF82AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter

Please refer also to the "Smart Device Connection Manual for iOS (iPhone/iPad Connection Manual)" and the "Computer-related Operations" Manuel, to download here:

https://usa.yamaha.com/support/manuals/index.html?l=en&c=keyboards&k=psr-e363
https://usa.yamaha.com/support/manuals/index.html?l=en&c=keyboards&k=psr-e463

And please refer to the information in E363 Manual (page 48) and / or in E463 Manual (page 47) as well.

P.S.
I almost forgot to mention: You do NOT need to use a separate (analog) Audio cable. Both MIDI and Audio data are transmitted via the USB connection. (The particular App on the iPad must support digital output, of course.)

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

➪ Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that and just did it.
➪ Never put the manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

Yes, the USB audio is a bidirectional connection-- the keyboard can send its audio to the computer, and the computer can send its audio to the keyboard. So you can use a DAW on the computer to record the keyboard's audio, and you can also use the keyboard's speakers to play audio coming from the computer.
