Genos internal clock?
« on: November 14, 2019, 10:50:54 PM »
Hello friends :)
Maybe a dumb question, but:
I have done absolutely nothing to connect my Genos to my router, but when I make files on it they have the correct date? How can that be? Does it have an internal clock? Pleasantly surprised!

Yes, Genos has internal clock, and you can even turn it off or on to be visible at your screen and to have timestamp on/off..
As you may know, Genos is no other than a computer, it's about bits and bytes, maincards, memory or whatever.
At PC you have keyboard, at Genos you have keybed. 😁
I suppose it's a backup battery at mainboard that keep time correct, even correction for summer / wintertime.

Btw, Toril, there is no dumb questions, only dumb answers. 😉

Hello Toril,

As mentioned, yes that clock there and you can even set it to daylight saving if you like (it doesn't change it automatically, but you can tell it that it is DST for example). Also: This clock is usually re-set during a firmware upgrade - so you might check it again after you put 2.0 on there this weekend :-)

Cheers, Roland

Hi Toril,

you can make the Time Settings manually, or let make them automatically (when Genos is connected to your Wi-Fi Router in "Infrastructure Mode").

Please refer also to pages 145/146 in Genos Reference Manual ("13 Network Settings - Making the Time Settings").

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Toril,

I believe that the power supply for the RTC (Real Time Clock) in Genos is a so called 'super capacitor', which acts like a battery and should manage to continue powering it for about a week after the keyboard is disconnected from the AC power supply.

Once all the power has drained from the super capacitor, the RTC will stop and you will need to reset it manually next time you power up the keyboard if you haven't got it connected to your router.

If you normally leave the keyboard switched off in standby mode, but still connected to the live AC supply, the RTC (real time clock) will continue to run indefinitely.

At some point in the future the super capacitor will fail, and it will need to be replaced if you want the RTC to continue running when the keyboard is not connected to the AC supply.  Hopefully though, this will not happen for a good number of years yet!

Regards

Ian

Ian is spot on as always. Service manual shows that it's a supercapacitor, not a battery.

All the best -- pj
