Tyros first version Upgrade?
« on: September 21, 2019, 10:09:02 PM »
Hi. A friend of mine has bought a very second hand Tyros keyboard. Let's say is the first model.... Tyros1 ?
The operative system is the original... I see there is a Operative System 1.4. Now my friend has a Floppy Disk emulator on the Tyros1.
How can we go and help him to make an upgrade to the OS 1.4? Is there any way we can make some virtual floppy to load the OS?
I have tried to connect his keyboard to ma laptop but it says the USB drivers are not correctly installed.
Any clue? Thanks

If I remember rightly the update is loaded onto Floppy disk and then installed through this.

Who ever he bought the keyboard from should have given him a USB drive that is formatted for use with the emulator and the software to format the USB drive.  I believe you have to format the USB stick as FAT 12 with special software, then the floppy emulator should be able to read the USB stick and it should show up on the computer as well.

There is no USB drive on a Tyros 1.

The OP states that there is a floppy emulator with a USB drive.  In order for the emulator to read the USB drive it has to be formatted correctly. When formatted correctly, the USB drive can have up to the equivalent of 100 floppies. I have one of these in my Yamaha MDF3 Data Filer/Sequencer. There is software that comes with the emulator that will format the USB drive and create those 100 virtual floppies. The keyboard will read one floppy at a time.  There is a button on the emulator to switch from one virtual floppy to the next.

YES. OK. We then need to load virtual diskette with the os and try that way. Thank you all.

As I stated above, you need the correct software that came with the emulator to format the USB drive so the floppy emulator will recognize it and be able to read it and write to it.  Not only does it have to be formatted as FAT12; the size of the virtual floppy drive(s) has to be 1.44MB to look like a real HD floppy.

hmmmm ....
I am just wondering . . .  do you already know what are the new features of the OS 1.4 that are not present in the original OS 1.0 ? are those features worth the trouble ?

Not sure that the Tyros1 will sound any better or give your friend great features that will compensate for all the trouble going to the upgrade.

If the Tyros1 is working fine . . .  i would just leave it alone . . . . why try to fix something that is not broken . . .  ?

What if the upgrade would cause some unknown problems . . . . ?

Just trying to provide another viewpoint . . .

thanks

The OP states that there is a floppy emulator with a USB drive.

There is also not a floppy emulator. There is an actual floppy drive.

Better to use the original floppy drive! But you need floppies, and a floppy drive to connect to the computer. I do this on my PSR 2100.

He clearly states there is a floppy emulator on his friends Tyros 1

Yes. I think he mis-spoke. There is an actual floppy drive.

In that case this is easy! Provided he has floppy diska and an external floppy drive for the PC. And provided he can get hold of an update file for the T1! That is the hard part!

How would you know this for a fact?

Actually there are 16 diskette to make the upgrade of  the Tyros 1. Jusy got them from the web.
Next I will try to put them each in a partition to the pendrive and then trying to make it work on the virtual Floppy Disk Drive.
I will let you know....maybe next week.
Be patient... LOL

P.s. If anyone would be interested in the Floppy Disk I will upload them for you. Just ask. Thanks!
