New PSR with 76 keys?
« on: March 18, 2019, 11:34:11 PM »
Hi,
in my country I saw a PSR-S775 at 799 euros when the normal price is 933 euros:
https://www.egitana.pt/yamaha-psr-s775?utm_source=kelkoopt&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=kelkooclick&utm_term=Yamaha+PSR-S775
I would buy it instantly... if it had 76 keys. Long before Yamaha introduced arrangers with 76 keys I wished one of those (a Genos is beyond my reach).
I wonder if this seller knows there will soon be a replacement for the S775/S975.
We already are occupying a portion of the keyboard playing chords with the left hand, on 61 keys keyboards I feel a bit limited.
Do you guys have any info if Yamaha will release a PSR S775/S975 with 76 keys?

regards,
Alvaro

Hi Alvaro,
I wonder if this keyboard is new and not a returned one or something else is happening? :)

In my view, 76 keys is one of the features that differentiates the S series from Tyros/Genos.

If they add all the features from Genos to the S series, who's going to fork out twice the price ...?

Hi Alvaro,

€ 799,- is an attractive price, I guess.

76 keys for an S-serie might be a dream that probably never will come true but one never knows ...

I would rather call it : " wishful thinking ".

Well the PSR-EW410 has 76 keys at 355 euros, so if a PSR E class has 76 keys why not the PSR S series?

Because it's *not* a PSR-E class, it's a PSR-EW class. W for wide.

Never understood why Yamaha has a 76 model in the entry level (E-series), in the top level (Tyros/Genos) but not in the mid-range (PSR-S).

You explained better than I did. Even if it is an EW, like Derek said, the PSR-EW410 is still an educational/entry level keyboard. I can only hope there will be a 76 keys version of the psr-s775/s975. I'll keep wishing  ;)

Derek's argument is not quite valid, or splitting hairs, at best :)
The EW400/410 is an E-series keyboard, with the W as "extension". The 410 has the same features and internal hardware as the 463.

Only Yamaha know whether they will ever offer a 76-key model in the PSR-S series.

But clearly there’s a demand, and Yamaha is almost certainly aware of that, so I suspect the chances are pretty good that we’ll eventually see one— but that’s just a guess and I might be wrong!

Yes OK I was being a bit mischevious :)

However the EW is not identical to the 463 - it's aimed at piano players who want to try an arranger, hence the 76 keys and the Natural! piano voice.

A 76-key version of an E series is not going to threaten Genos sales. But a 76-key version of an S975 might ....

Yamaha marketing must have gamed this out. The world has an insatiable hunger for piano-like objects and the Live! piano and 76 keys might just be enough to drive further E-series sales. The EW has a higher output amplifier, too. (12W+12W)

It looks like there is much interest in 76 keys.

Nobody here talks about 88 keys.
Apparently there is no need for 88 keys,
right ?

I think that's getting into DGX/P/CP/Clavinova territory. :)

I am sure many would love 88 keys, but that has to be balanced against cost and portability. I think one of things that is interesting is that arrangers grew out of the home organ market but as time has passed they are becoming more 'piano' like with touch sensitivity, weighted keys and extended keybeds. Then from the other end we had electronic pianos coming from the piano market, but as time has passed they are adding more and more synth and accompaniment features. There is still a bit of separation, but that separation may disappear. In some ways other than it is not portable the CVPs are almost already there, although the piano simulation is still a bit lacking compared to the real thing. The future top of the line models we see will continue that merging and integration of functions and be more like a portable version of the CVP. Quality piano simulation is already there, but very expensive, and the models tend to be heavy.  But over time the piano simulation will improve and get lower in cost and one day we will see keyboards which match the best grand pianos in playability and sound, have all of the advanced accompaniment and voices of the best arrangers and synths, and are affordable.

76 is enough for me. And I think an 88 key device would be to bulky to be really portable. I have 7 to 10 rehearsels and gigs a month, to which I need to carry my keyboard, stand and mic stand (amp is provided, luckily). Most of those rehearsels are located on the second floor or in a church, which can only be reached by a small staircase with a 90 degree turn. My T5 76 is actually getting too big and bulky for this, let alone an 88 key device...

Thank you, Robert, for your reply.

Does it mean Yamaha will continue the production of 61 keys for the S-serie and a 76 keys S-serie will not be available in the near future ?

No one knows the answer to this. We can only speculate. Maybe Yamaha has a plan, maybe they don’t.
