The S970 and External monitor.
« on: November 11, 2018, 10:43:11 PM »
Hello friends! I have extremely poor vision, and want to use an external monitor with my S970, but NOT for PDFs lyrics or sheet music! I just want a big, blown up replica of all the screens in the menus of the keyboard, style selection menu, voice selection, functions and so on. I have also looked at an exiting alternative, electronic glasses called e-Sight. These can be connected to the HDMI output of e.g. a laptop, and the image of the screen will then show up on two screens inside these glasses. That way I could sit at my keyboard, look at the screen through these glasses (looks like VR gear) and will not have to stoop down all the time to look at the screen. But when I asked my dealer if the S970 could be connected to an external device such as this, or a monitor, they said no. It is only for reading lyrics and so on. But i think I read something on this forum about that it is possible. Another solution for me that I am thinking of is buying a lightning to HDMI adapter and using my iPad with my S970. That way I could have the screen of the iPad even closer without blocking the wiev to the audience. Again the store said no, but I amagine I have read yes on this forum. Or is it just wishful thinking? Oh, sorry, this post became rather long!

Have you actually tried that? The manual says:
Quote
you can have the lyrics, text and display of the instrument’s LCD shown on the monitor.
And I've seen some PSR-S??? machine connected in such a way, but I don't recall the exact model number.

Hi Toril

Your dealer is wrong!  ::)

If you look at the section 'Connecting an External Monitor ([RGB OUT] terminal) (PSR-S970)' on page 99 of the English version of the PSR-S970 Owner's Manual, you will see that you can set the output of the RGB video to show either 'Lyrics/Text' or 'LCD' (keyboard's internal LCD screen).

To set the 'Display Out' press FUNCTION > Tab to MENU 1 > UTILITY > TAB to CONFIG 2.

Select Option1 : Speaker/Display Out, and the display will show the settings for Display Out at the bottom of the screen above the #5 & 6 button pairs.

Make sure that any monitor that you use has a suitable RGB input (eg VGA), or you will need to buy an adaptor/converter!

Finally I don't think that your proposed connection to an iPad would work, since as far as I know the video signal is not available via USB!

Hi Toril
You certainly can use a monitor with the PSR S970,but take care  to buy the correct one otherwise there may be display problems,ie size of screen displayed on the monitor

This may help you,Woody is an english man living in Sweden and he explains the problems

FWIW.....
It looks as if the S970 has an RGB output connector. I was at a local thrift store this morning and happen to look at a couple computer monitors they had. One did have an RGB connection on it and was priced at about $10(US). It is a bit of a risk buying used like this, but many times these show up at the thrift store simply because the owner has upgraded to something new. I did recently buy a LCD TV that had a VGA connection to use with a laptop for a Karaoke display and it works perfectly.
I'm not fully sure the difference between RGB and VGA, but maybe someone could explain that.

Hi Mark,

VGA means "Video Graphic Array", RGB means "Red Green Blue Color Model":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Graphics_Array

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RGB_color_model

The so called "RGB" connectors on Yamaha-Keyboards ("15-pin D-SUB female") are fully compatible to Monitors that have a so called "VGA" input (and a "15-pin D-SUB male" connector). :)

Best regards,
Chris

Thanks Chris. I knew what the acronyms VGA and RGB stood for, but wasn't sure of compatibility between the two for the signals they carry, particularly where the cable is the same for both. I have used RGB via RCA cables, but using a D-SUB cable is a bit new to me.
I did just find the link below and it does cite some differences. The signals are quite different.

Hi Tori S,

since the Video output of the S970 is a VGA connector (Yamaha call it "RGB", but it is definitely "VGA" ;)), you have to use a monitor with a "VGA" input.

To use an monitor with HDMI input, you can use a "VGA-to-HMDI" converter:

Thanks Chris :) I already have such a converter. Had to buy it to use external monitor with my new laptop. That means I will be able to use the e-Sight glasses also. BUT, they have sky high prices, and I am also a little worried about how I will look on gigs with these on :) I think I will go for the monitor option....
On the other hand, if I play science fiction movie themes it won't matter :)

Toril,
If you already have a laptop with monitor.  You might be able to use the device described in this post . . . .

to transfer the image from your keyboard display to the laptop with external monitor.    Presumably, the keyboard display will be shown on the external monitor of your laptop.

I do not use it but you might want to check on this . .  .
