Hi Kim,

here we run into the same discussion as whether there is an immediately audible difference of the Genos compared to the Tyros 5.  Some say there is, some cannot hear it.  You will probably get a lot of suggestions.  We are all convinced what we are used to is the best alternative. So was I. Up till now I used Genelec studio monitors (still in available and selling for 4000 € a pair)  They weigh 17 kg each and have fine-tuning  micro switches.  My ears liked them but my back  did not. I witched to  7 kg ALTO 10  active loudspeakers and after a minuscule adjustment in the Genos sound setting  I and those I polled could hear no difference though the price of the Genelec monitors is  10 times that of the ALTOs.  So either our ears are all substandard or the Genelecs are overpriced or do have an edge  at high volume which I have never needed, their gain having never been set to more than 50 % like the ALTOs
Some liked the Tyros speakers for the Tyros. I did not.  Some say the Genos speakers are better than the Tyros speakers. I would advise you to either find a dealer who will let you try the speakers  in the environment you are going to use them in or order on the net.  At least in Europe the law gives you the right to return goods bought on the net, so you can order  2 sets and choose the one that sounds best to you.  And do not forget  to use the Genos equalizer and compressor before you decide on the more expensive set.

Cheers

For home, you may want to consider two of the

Yamaha Studio Monitors HS8.

Hi Al - Will the HS-8 or HS-7 for that matter be comparable to the Genos speakers? I bought a GENOS with speakers on back order. First they told me May then it became late July. Now everybody (dealers online too) are saying Sept. 10th. I'm not concerned with looks as I'm quarantined to the downstairs half bathroom 'cause (wifie) hates my playing. The HS-7s I can get tomorrow. Don in MI

I do not have the Genos speakers and i never purchased the speakers that come with the keyboard (ie. Tyros 5 or 4).  So, i have no way of comparing.    I have one HS-8 and one Bose L1 and i really like the sound.

If for home only, i would say two HS-8 would be great.

A pair of HS-8 can be used for home OR one L1 for gigs outside home.

If gigging frequently, i would go with one Bose L1.

Bose is notorious for not publishing the frequency response of their speakers. They have a link to the "Specs". Well, give us the darn specs, not just the dimensions and weight - those aren't audio specs!!!

The S1s probably don't go deep enough in the bass for my liking. Then again, how would I know? They don't tell me!!

I use the HS8s for my studio monitors. They don't carry very well across the room. Then again, they aren't designed for that. If you just want near field listening, they should be far better than the Genos speakers.

The choice of speakers is somewhat subjective (what sounds good to you).. Also the space they are in is very important..  A little research into it, will be of help..  I put up some high absorbing foam squares, and have a theater sound deadening curtains, at the back of the walls, of my studio (really my living room).. (The theater curtains has sound absorbing sheet between the two layers of curtain..  I  bought a pair of Genelec 8040 A's  several years ago..  The definition is supreme.  While these would not be good for live performance, because of their 'focus',  they are great for a studio setting.

Again each person, will have different tastes, and there is not a real 'right' or wrong.  However you want speakers which let you mix, eq your song, so that it sound good on other systems.. Some stores will let you bring a CD of your own, to A/B on different speakers. The other thing, is that you become familiar with your particular speakers, and the room.  You might have to compensate, roll off a little bottom end, so they will sound good on other systems.. I'd google for reviews of speakers, take them all with a grain of salt..

Hi Don,

I have both the Genos 2.1 speakers (GNS-MS01), and a pair of HS8 powered studio monitors used with a 16-channel 4-bus analog mixer for multiple keyboards/arrangers:

When compared with the HS8 powered studio monitors, the GNS-MS01 2.1 speaker system has heavier bass due to its subwoofer, a little warmer mid and treble sounds, which are decent considering its small satellite speakers.  The HS8 speakers have cleaner and more neutral sounds overall, very linear frequency responses, and better stereo separation than the GNS-MS01 speakers.

I auditioned the HS5, HS7, and HS8 speakers at a local Guitar Center.  To my ears, the HS8 speakers sound better overall and so I settled with the HS8.  If I went with HS7, I would have to also buy the HS8S subwoofer to augment the bass.

If I do not have the GNS-MS01 and HS8 speakers already, I will probably buy a pair of IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors for decent sounds in a small package for convenient placement:

Think about buying the JBL LSR305. Many Youtube videos state, that they sound much better than the Yamaha HS Series. I love them. They are perfect, even without a sub.

If you're looking for the best sound in a small package then I would highly recommend the QSC K8.2 speakers mrkim. They are a little over your budget but well worth the extra $$ in my opinion. You'll get great sound with built-in DSP effects and lots of power plus a wide coverage angle of 105 degrees. You said you wanted the best sounding speakers for home use and these are a great option that won't disappoint in my opinion. Happy shopping!

QSC K8.2 2000W 8" Powered Speaker

PS: The reviews are about the cover bag for the speaker(s) not for the speakers themselves. You can read reviews about the speakers >> here

2x Mackie HR824 (mark I) monitors at home, 2x QSC K8 gig rig, 1x Yamaha DBR-10 floor monitor thru a Bose PA at church -- happy with all.

I occasionally use the K8's at home, too.

Bose is in another league when it comes to frequency response.  You have to hear them live to understand.

I use the S1’s for about every venue but large sanctuaries and I’m thinking about trying my S1’s in that venue as well.

Many years ago, a number of forum members tried and loved using the Logitech Z5500, which, unfortunately, is no longer available. However, they do have a lot of new replacements, sound systems that are just awesome, especially in a home environment. Their 5.1 Surround Sound systems work extremely well, even on small jobs. One of our members, who has long since passed away, modified his Z5500 by building a special cabinet and used it for entertaining in large Nevada casinos.

Go and give the Yamaha DXR 8's a try

They are nearly a£1000 and very powerful .

Use them at low volume and they are CLASSSS.

Also if you did want to hold a party you would be still a winner  5 year guarantee as well and built like a tank each powered speaker.

All the best
John :)

I use a Logitech Z623 2.1 speaker system which I already had.  The Z623 is the successor to the larger Z2300 (which I also have).    The Z623 has 400Wpk/200Wrms, sells for about $130 and the sub only weighs 15#.  I thought the Z623 would be nicer since it has the bass/volume/power controls easily accessible on the right speaker.

I made a couple of cheap mounts that fit in the existing speaker holes for the L and R speakers.  I put a handle on the sub in case I decide to use it at gigs.   I attached pix of the installation.

These speakers sound fine to me but but unfortunately I don't really know what good speakers sound like.  These Logitechs are actually the best and most expensive speakers I've ever heard :-(

I have a pair also, after using my Z2200's for small gigs and studio for some years.  I was surprised that they are almost as good as my Bose, but don't carry as far.  I think they are the biggest bang for the buck out there.

Hi Kim,
For your own enjoyment at home  JBL LSR308s are a good choice  as I presume   "room 12x30"  referred to feet, not meters or yards, ;) because in that case you would be living at Buckingham Palace or on Sunset Boulevard  and would need heftier speakers.  Even at gigs my experience is you do not need the 1000 $ speakers as long as your music is meant to be heard, not  felt  like at outdoor rock concerts.

Cheers

Kaarlo
