Using Cubase for Styles
« on: April 12, 2018, 01:12:06 AM »
Hi guys, here I am again. I made my own styles with Cubase and as I used to do in the past with another keyboard, Ie saved the file in midifile format. Then I changed the extension of the file from .mid to .sty
When I load the file on Genos and play it, the style play but no sound from the keyboard. Some advices???

Thanks for your patience with me.... ::)

It's missing the CASM chunk which are the instructions to tell the keyboard how to play the style.

Hi Ullo,
as I understand for a style to play to a Yamaha keyboard exceprt from the midi file' orders it also needs also this casm thing that contains informations for how the keyboard must play the style.
If this casm is missing from a style the keyboard cannot play the style.
http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/articles/style2_2.htm

Thats why we use programs to create styles that made to work for Yamaha keyboards and can handle these casm information properly.

Yes. midi2style or StyleMagic will convert a style you created in Cubase or other sequencer / DAW to a style file by adding the CASM chunk.

But... you must use the correct MIDI channels when creating the style.

Ch 9 & 10 = drums
Ch 11  = Bass
Ch 12 = Chord 1
Ch 13 = Chord 2
Ch14 = Pad or strings
Ch 15 = Phrase 1
Ch 16 = Phrase 2

If you did not use these channel you can assign them correctly with both midi2style or StyleMagic

Hello everyone. I would like to thank you for your kind suggestions. I hope I can still take your advice in the future because I will definitely need it. Today I will definitely buy StyleMagic which seems to be a very good program. I just hope to know how to use it. Thanks again to everyone,  ;)

Many thx guys. Unfortunately I don't know how to use CASM  ' chunk'

Hi --

Please think of a Yamaha style file as a container (like a box). A style file contains chunks. A regular style file has three chunks: MIDI, CASM and OTS. The MIDI chunk is in Type 0 Standard MIDI Format (SMF).

The CASM chunk holds the Style File Format Settings. (Genos Reference Manual, page 21). The OTS chunk holds the One Touch Settings.

Audio style files hold two additional chunks beyond the standard ones: The AASM chunk describes the audio information for each style section (e.g., Main A) and the AFil chunk contains the audio waveforms (along with some other gunk).

Ordinary DAWs like Sonar, Cubase, etc. don't know about the CASM or OTS chunks. If you read a style file with Sonar, etc., the DAW throws the CASM and OTS chunks away. If you create a MIDI (style) file with a DAW, the file does not have the CASM or OTS chunks. You need to add these chunks in order to get a complete style file. (Yamaha Audio Phraser can be used to create the audio file chunks.)

I use Jørgen Sørensen's tools to create and edit the CASM and OTS chunks. There are other good tools available like Michael Bedesem's MixMaster and the tool StyleMagic, as mentioned by Joe.

Michael's tools are available at:

https://psrtutorial.com/MB/bedesem.html

Jørgen's web site is:

http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/

At this point, we usually recommend that new style developers should read the style creation tutorials, etc. that are available on Jørgen's site (and elsewhere). Style development is a bit technical and is not so easy to do well.

Hope this helps -- pj

Guys... I am in a mess... I purchased StyleMagic 3.After downloading the program, I installed it as an administrator. After the installation I launched it but unfortunately it does not work. When I launch the program it appears for a moment and then disappears. Use Windows 7 Ultimate. I also wrote to Thomas for support. Has the problem presented itself to any of you? We hope it can be solved otherwise I threw money in vain.
Thanks for the help you can give me

Sounds like your dongle is not working.  That's how StyleMagic boots without a dongle.
