arranger functionality of PSR s770/970 in software (Win/Mac)
« on: March 12, 2018, 04:31:06 AM »
Hello,

I have an older motif keyboard and I am very interested in starting to work with styles.
Right now buying a PSR S770/970 is not in my budget, so I was wondering if there is any software (Windows or Mac) that provides
similar functionality to the arranger / accompaniment of the S770/S970 and can use the Yamaha styles from the various PSR keyboard.

Thank you,
Ty

Hello

If it's just a problem of budget why not buying used PSR S950/750 or S910/710 ?
They are good keyboards as well.

The only software I know that can read psr styles and play them live is vArranger
But if you want to play live hardware may be a better solution

I would suggest downloading a demo copy of StyleMagic.  I have a Voice Definition file for the Motif XS.  It should work OK with the original Motif or Motif ES.  If you decide to try it.  Just post here and I will attach the file here.

Thanks Joe H,

I checked StyleMagic, it is an editor to edit/create style files,
this is part of the PSR functionality, I am also looking for
the playing part (i.e., play a part of the style, like an intro,
use the left part of the keyboard to change the chord, then,
do a fill in and move to Main A etc.)

I don't think StyleMagic has that.

Joe H - when you write voice definition file, so you mean the older Cakewalk *.ins file ?
If so, I would be grateful if you know how can I get one for the model I use,
it is the MX61, the entry level Motif

Also, I did some research and came up with 2 titles -

one man band - http://www.1manband.nl
Accompaniment Machine - http://kbd-infinity.com/accompaniment_machine.html

that might also do what I describe above, not sure, as they look pretty complex,
has any one had any experience with these ?

Thanks,
Ty

only varranger seems to match your requirements
https://www.varranger.com/

But have a look at 2nd hand PSR keyboards . At the end it must be cheaper as software solution

StyleMagic is a playback program for styles and a style editor.  The important thing is having a Voice definition file that supports your instrument.  If you want to play Yamaha styles on your MX then StyleMagic is the program that will allow you to do that, not as you want to play styles like we can on an arranger.

I don't think there is an easy answer for you short of buying an arranger keyboard.  If you want an arranger then buy an arranger. You won't be able to do it with software, because software doesn't have the necessary code like in the arranger keyboard to "interpret" the way styles are recorded. Whenever we play styles on ANY software it will sound different because the arranger OS code is not there.

If Itaydagani wants to play live and change chords llike an arranger I am not sure Band In the Box an do that

You can try one man band  & Accompaniment Machine but I am afraid you will be disappointed.
Nothing is better than an arranger

or maybe something like korg microarranger?

Thank you very much for your inputs, guys.

I think you are correct, nothing beats the actual hardware.
I tried to search around for PSR's, all I could find are some very entry level stuff.
or one where the owner wants the same price of a new keyboard for a used one.

best price so far I could find for a new PSR S770 is $900, if anyone knows something better,
please let me know.

Thank you very much for all the help :-)

Best,
Ty
