No, I use a piano pedal bought online works perfectly, you can set the polarity on the 970 Function/Controller button.
Enjoy.

I started off with a piano type pedal which worked OK, but it was quite clumsy under my feet and I found that the smaller and flatter Yamaha FC5 pedal suits me better. (I use it exclusively for changing registrations)

I recommend buying the original FC5 pedals from the yamaha.
They are very good pedals, I have 2 to more than 8 years without any problem and without any maintenance.
I've had others with unknown brands, real crap!

Pedals such as or similar to the Yamaha FC5 and the FC4 Sustain pedal (latest model FC4A) are just simple non latching switches which can only generate On or Off status.

They do not generate any continuously variable signal which a keyboard could interpret for use with continuous MIDI controllers such as CC11!

You need a Volume or Expression pedal such as the Yamaha FC7 for CC11 (Expression) or CC7 (Channel Volume).

I have three FC7 pedals and use them on my Yamaha S970, Korg, and Hammond.  Great pedals.

I use x3 Yamaha pedals ... Have used with old PSR-2700, Tyros5-76, and now Genos. (Sustain/Expression/Switch)
They are great pedals, but you can use any .. But make sure each pedal is separate wiring to it.
Polarity can be programmed.
I would hazard a guess that the cheap expression pedals maybe are not so smooth an action (electronically)

😊  I started out with nothing .. and I've got most of it left!  😊

🎹 Tyros 5-76,  now the brilliant Genos 🎹
