Genos - Drive Letters of USB-Stick Ports
« on: November 27, 2017, 04:02:11 PM »
Hi, all together,
GENOS has 3 USB-Ports which USB-sticks can use.
As I know from my Yamaha PSR-S970, the keyboard-internal letter of this USB-drive strictly is "I:/"
I would be grateful if somebody knows something about GENOS's drive-management.
Does GENOS
A - assign fixed drive letters to each of the USB-stick-ports OR
B - assign fixed drive letters to USB-sticks in temporal order of used USB-sticks with the keyboard,
>> for example for A:
USB 1 - I:/
USB 2 - J:/
USB 3 - K:/
>> for example for B:
first USB-Stick (independendly which USB-stick-port is used): I:/
second USB-Stick (independendly which USB-stick-port is used): J:/
third USB-Stick (independendly which USB-stick-port is used): K:/

Does somebody have an idea ?
Thanks in advance,
Klaus
Best Regards, Klaus
... and have fun playing your preferred Keyboard !

Klaus,
USB1 is not alway the Port hidden underneath the keyboard.
Sometimes it appears as USB2.  None the less - it still works just fine.
I have not had any issues so far with the port names.

The hidden USB reads as USB 1. The others will read USB 2 or 3 which ever way you put then in. The only way the main stick may read differently is if you switch on or off with a stick left in the keyboard. This is something I never do so I don't get any problems with it changing.

Why use a USB stick, when you have 58GB USER space?

I use it only for backup.

Many thanks to all of you for your excellent replies.
The link in reply#2 contains exactly that what answered my question, based on Yamaha's feedback.
Background:
I am using Murray Bests's Yamaha Registration Manager very often and especially to change the paths in the registration by batch. A good friend of mine with its new GENOS discussed this object with me today. We were not really sure whether and how the GENOS operating system is doing this job. If the first used USB-Stick (of the three) gets a drive letter coincidently (we thought), a path with I: in the Registration (to find STY- / MID- /TXT-files) could be a problem, if the USB 1 had a different letter. In so far I'm happy with this answer. Thanks again for help !!

@Wim: You are quite right, however, to use a stick as backup - whenever a severe reason exists to use the stick instead of the hard disk - it were a problem if the drive letter would change coincidently.

When you want to use the GENOS USER instead of the USB drive.

Just a view steps:

Copy your USB data to GENOS USER by map
Expansion
MULTI PAD
REGIST
SONG
STYLE
SYSTEM
TEXT
VOICE

When you for instand you have a mixed map with Styles and song and Multi pads.
Just copy the mixed map to all 3 maps STYLE. SONG, MULTI PAD
The Genos will sort it out.
Only styles Will be copy into the STYLE map
Only songs and audio Will be copy into the SONG map
Only multi pads will be copy into the STYLE map

I did used a old program Tyros Global Registration Manager
It will also work for Tyros5 and Genos
Download it here : http://www.kwmusik.dk/Tyros/?id=3

Style check
Find what: E:
Replace with : C:/STYLE

Song check
Find what: E:
Replace with : C:/SONG

Multipad check
Find what: E:
Replace with : C:/MULTI PAD

Select your source registration folder with all subfolders in it
Select your destination folder to put your changed registration for the GENOS user
(may be the same as your source folder, only it will be overwrite)

Then apply in the program.

Then copy your new registration in the GENOS REGIST folder.

Now your registrations will work straight out of the Genos USER.

The only correction is that MULTI PAD has a space. So it needs to be C:/MULTI PAD.

For a lot of us, you're absolutely correct. Believe it or not, some folks have hundreds of GB of stuff on their T5.

I do also have more then 58 GB, so I cut out the audio to the USB1
The I have enough with 58 GB
Also easy to have my audio on USB stick to use elsewhere.

Wim

Is there also a utility to find&replace e:/path to i:/path for an MDF file (PSR 970)?
If I open the MFD file with notepad/wordpad and I change & save it, the file isn't recognized anymore in the keyboard.

If you are familiar with Murray's YRM why not edit the regsitrations and remove the paths completely? That way you will have access to all custom pads, voice sets, etc. as long as you stick the custom files and the registration in the same folder. Then no matter where and in which folder and whatever name you want to use it will work. USB1, 2, 3, User Area it wouldn't matter. If you you use preset or expansion voices, drumkits, multi pads you don't need paths since it will address them properly no matter what. The only downside of removing paths is when you change settings or whatever in that registration and re-save them on your keyboard. If you do you would have to run the "remove paths" again in YRM since your keyboard will restore the current paths in your RGT again. On the other hand you don't need to modify the registration on your keyboard since you coould do it on your pc with YRM :)

Regarding the USB puzzle: It works just like it does in MS Windows. As long as you keep the startup configurations of the Genos the same (al or 1 or 2  in the same place) nothing will ever change. As soon as you remove a USB stick or move it into another USB slot and fire up the Genos chances are the drive letters will change rendering RGT's with paths not working properly anymore. teh new drive letters will be remembered that way for the next time you start up until you change the number of attached sticks or the place they are located in again :)

kind regards,
Peter

You are correct. You cannot modify an MFD file with Notepad or Wordoad.

With Genus OS 1.30, drive letters are immaterial, as it will search them all. So you probably just need to update your OS.

If so I stand corrected Fred,

I do not own a Genos so still building my response on the old situation. Doesn't change the YRM workaround though since the "no path" option will solve it no matter what :)

You're right about the "no path" option, Peter. Sure would be nice if the keyboard would leave it alone on memorizing a registration.

Hi

Why on earth do people worry what drive letter It is
This also happens on a computer when you plug In more than one usb.
Just means pressing another tab that's all :-X

You'll understand when you start working with registrations that reference external files (like custom styles).

Hi Fred
It is not a problem for me.
As long as I know where things are, no worries.
It is only like a supermarket that keeps moving the shelf stock about.
If I have custom styles I put those on my Internal drive and call up others if i need them later. You can get a massive amout on the Usb in the undercarriage.

All te best
John :)

Hi Fred
The foolproof way would be to put all the sound, style and pads In a separate folder with the registration and name the whole folder as a song of your choice ,then all is together and then  It does not matter what the drive letter Is.
I should think that most people would make a song set on the main drive and change that later for a new set If needed.

all The Best
John :)

Hi Chris,

to my knowledge, in March 2018 many contents of this forum were deleted at a Server upgrade.

But some old contents can be accessed by using the "Way Back Machine" (archive.org):

You probably will not be able to log in there, but this is "better as nothing" ... ;)
