Genos Specs vs Tyros5-76
« on: October 10, 2017, 08:50:03 PM »
Now that the technical specifications have been published by Yamaha, I constructed an Excel spreadsheet of the Genos specifications and added a column showing the Tyros5-76 specs for the same thing.  An "N/A" in the table means I could not find that line item in the Genos Specs or perhaps in the T5 specs.  Here's the link:

Joe,

You could add that Genos has a limit of 2500 files/folder while the T5 has 500.

Also, doesn’t the T5 support wireless LAN

Nice comparrison

However, we also know that touch, feel and sound of a keyboard are equally important as the specs...

Hello,
Just to clarify the number of voices: According to the chart, the tyros 5 has 1279 + 480 XG voices; the Genos has 1652 voices.
Does the Genos not have these XG voices as well ?
With 1652, does the Genos have than many different voices than the Tyros 5 ?

Thanks for helping me to understand this aspect of the specs.

I am going to make a guess that the XG voice set in the Genos is in addition to the 1652 voices listed in the specs, so in comparison to the Tyros 5 the Genos should read 1652 + 480 XG voices. Since the Genos has significant increases in areas of the 76 Ensemble, 390 Super Articulation!, 75 Super Articulation2!, 82 MegaVoice, 40 Sweet!, 81 Cool!, 160 Live!, and 24 Organ Flutes over the Tyros 5, it would make more sense that the Genos voices are a total of 1652 plus the XG voice set.

Either way, the new Genos voices are going to be outstanding, and all the included older standard voice sets will even sound better on the Genos.

The YouTube video below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WldfskpP7dA&list=RDWldfskpP7dA&t=4

also provides a comparison between Genos and T5.

Around 1:18 (one minute, 18 seconds) they list the voices for:
Genos:  1652 + 58 Drum/SFX Kits
Tyros:  1279 + 480 XG + 37 Drum/SFX Kits

They did not include any XG voices for Genos . . . .

Thanks

I figured that the XG voice set would still be there because the Genos vital specs list XG compatibility (for Song playback), GS (for Song playback), GM, GM2. If you were to play a standard XG MIDI file on the Genos, I would imagine it would select the default XG voices, but as I said, it is only a guess because we don't have the official Genos Data List published yet.

What I find very surprising is the number of "session" styles that decreased.

Not having any xg voices would be strange....   because its a requirement for backward compatibillity.. i gauge yamaha forgot to list them

Here's my theory.

The S770 (for example) lists that GS voices are there, but for MIDI file playback only. You can't select GS voices from the panel - only when a MIDI file is playing. I suspect that internally, it maps the GS voices onto something it has.

Now this is similar to the way the Genos spec describes XG voices as for MIDI playback. So perhaps it will be the case that you cannot select XG from the panel, but that midi files using XG will map onto something else. If that's true, then at least some of the additional 370 or so voices would be genuinely new.

We need that data list!

I expect Yamaha to keep the same Voice folder structure as we find it in the current products. Right now, we need to push the up arrow button to get to the voice folder containing the preset voice categories, Legacy, XG, etc. folders.

Anyone see a "Legacy" folder on the Voice Selection screen in one of the demo videos? Or an up arrow that would navigate to the Legacy, XG, etc. folders? A little bird tells me that we will find them there. Yamaha are good about backward compatibility.

Also, basic arithmetic shows that there are about 600 to 700 regular voices unaccounted for, after tallying up the featured voices.

The XG sound set occupies a tiny part of the overall waveform memory. It would be hard to imagine being left out.

All the best -- pj

I cannot see a  INITIAL TOUCH
This button turns the touch response of the keyboard on or off. When off, the same volume is produced no matter how strongly or softly you play the keyboard.

Joe - THANKS for putting that XLS together  :)
Here in Australia right now it looks like there is very little difference in the prices of these two models.
I know all of this is very subjective but I am disappointed that my "personal" needs were not included in the Genos - so that now leaves me wondering whether to go Genos or T5.

I do want 76 that's for sure and I DO love touch screen and joystick so that alone may push me over the Tyros edge into Genos-land.

I guess, like we are all indicating, if the price gets to a reasonable level then decisions are easier.

Anyhow this was really intended as a "thanks" reply for getting that info together - appreciated Joe.

Cheers

Pete :)

Hello everyone!

From what I read, do you mean that they removed the "Voice SET" function?
If that's true, it's a big setback for me, unless they replaced it with something else.
