Zooming in on the "show.jpg" picture and looking at the wall, one can read the tag line:

Take Control Of Your Music

So I think Yamaha are going to emphasize the nine sliders, six "nuclear tower" knobs and the six assignable knobs and the real time effects that they have.

P.S. I count eightteen (18!) Genos'es in the show.jpg picture!  :o

The layout is taken from the PSR-S line. There the multi pads are also on the right side.

Great looking keyboard ,but no show on what speaker system It will use

Multi-pads on the right hand side even better, but registration changing may be awkward as It Is in the middle.
No doubt with some practice It will be a breeze to use.

It is just the pain of that manual again!! :o :)

One thing I didn't like.
The display on Tyros 3/4/5 is adjustable (more vertical up/down).
In Genos, it is fixed, looking like the PSR-S series.

For me, the biggest kickback until now.

Someone may say: this occours because of the touch display. I don't think so. The touch display may be adjustable either.

The "Star Dust" teaser clearly shows pairs of holes in the back, very similar to the Tyros. So I assume that one pair will be for the document holder and the other one for a speaker. Looks like the Genos will have the same sort of speaker setup as the Tyros series.

The harmony/arp button tells me that there will only be a single arp
Which gives the whole thing the idea of a toy and not a tool.

With all due respect, I think you are jumping to conclusions. The "Star Dust" teaser said in the text on YouTube that all sounds were coming from the Genos. The arps I heard in that demo are no toys! They sound very good!

Now that we know how the instrument looks like, I can't wait to hear the thing in action!

It reads "rotary sp - assignable".
"Rotary sp" stands for "rotary speaker" I guess. Good news for organ lovers.
By the way the 76 keys are also good news for organ lovers because it is easier to mimick a double keyboard than with 61 keys.

It had better sound good, because I think it looks terrible!

For example that tiny 'Exit' button all out on its own looks silly. I wonder if they will be soft-feel buttons like the PSRs, or clicky like the Tyros. And that narrow little window above the sliders just reminds me of the SY synths.

I'm a bit surprised to see a button dedicated to 'rotary speaker' rather than a more generic 'DSP', seems a bit specific. No 'DSP Variation' button - perhaps that's relegated to the touch screen now - or one of those 6 'assignable' buttons.

It looks like you can crossfade between 'Song A' and 'Song B' - I don't think I've read much speculation about that before, wonder what that's all about.

Interested to know just how 'assignable' the knobs, sliders and buttons are - if they are genuinely assigable to control anything, now that would be useful.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeew, now I can breathe again.  ;D

Well, I rather like the direction of the industrial design -- clean, professional. If the overall form factor holds, the weight may have come down from the T5.

A fixed display probably weighs less than a tilt design, but it's clear that many people are expecting a tilt design.

Not to be a wet blanket, but I'm still not sure what I'm looking at (early demo model vs. final product design). Not that it matters, but I don't really want to invest emotion in something which may change.

Deep breaths, deep breaths. Sitting by a quiet mountain stream, birds chirping, AUM.  :D

Love you guys -- pj

Hi,

Thanks for the pictures.

I don't like the design at all, not enough buttons, too sparse, reminds me of the Korgs from 10 to 20 years back. By the way, the crossfade between song A and B was already there on the Korg PA 50 (and someone on another forum says on the G70 already), so its not a novelty (but it can help in a live situation).

It is time we HEAR the damn board... :P

Hi Roger,

Well of course, even a top-notch keyboard will never replace an organ. But for someone occasionally wanting to play organ on the keyboard, it is easier to do with 76 than with 61 keys (same thing for piano players: even if a real piano has 88 keys, it is easier to play a piano tune on a keyboard with 76 keys than on one with only 61 keys obviously).

I guess that Yamaha is considering the Genos as an all-round keyboard, not specialised in anything but at ease in any situation.

Just my 2 cents,

Regards,

Vinciane.

The design shows exactly the same implementation as on the psr970..
Where there is a single button for harmony and arp
Which ony works on the r1 voice...

Its enough to convince me that its the same implementation..
To make arps a tool,of art, they should have done it the motif way
With 4 arps...thats so much more usefull

I share your disappointment.  Looks like one arpeggiator... but we will have to see if the harmony Arp button leads to a Menu of something more substantial than the S970.   The arp can be assigned to R1, R2 or both.   The MX61 is bottom of the line Motif series and boasts 2 live arpeggiators at a price of $450.00 USD.

Lets hope there is a substantial increase in the number of arps on the Genos.  The S970 has only 163.   And the $450.00 MX keyboard comes with 999 arps.  This is why I bought a Motif Rack XS... I can play the 6033 arps on the  S970 R1 or R2 channel... probably could route it to Left Voice if I wanted to.

I also agree with your issue on center-detent pots vs. rotary encoders which are far superior.  The LED display will help I'm sure.  So we will have to wait and see if Yamaha incorporated encoder code for the 9 Faders.  This is also important because that kind of firmware code eliminates "jumps" in the current setting when we want to adjust a parameter.

One of my disappointments with the S970 is there should be a popup dialog appear on screen when adjusting the 2 Live Control knobs.  this would allow us to know the actual value of the parameter we are adjusting.  Also knob values saved in each registration.  These could be fixed with a firmware update... but no, Yamaha don't do that... they save it for the next model.

I noticed no fade in / out button.

I suppose you will have to assign a knob for that
I do not know why people are getting worried about this and  that as I am sure a lot of thing will be accessible through the touch screen.
I like the old fashioned new look  and It does not look too cluttered.

I do hope that Sys Ex is talking between the Genos and Sonar Platinum this time and hope I do not have to get a dedicated Ipad.
I cannot waste all by vst's
Sonar has a great piano roll for editing and a pleasant workface.
Just wished that yamaha listens and has a Daw just for the Genos with a great piano roll and sound editing.
You also get what you pay for and the Genos has a lot to live up to In the next few weeks and sure It will pass with flying colours :)

We have not seen how the keyboard will look like when it is powered ( leds and screen on ), with speaker set and stand etc.

Then we can talk about the design, I guess.

I have always loved the Tyros design.
It was/is so different than all other arrangers.

I hope the Genos is creating that same feeling.

I don't see any dedicated buttons to turn style parts On and Off.  Too much dependency of the touch screen... not good.  I use the channel On / Off buttons all the time when working on an arrangement. There should be 8 buttons, preferably assignable.  They had it right with the Montage... either / or... screen or buttons.  So... this will require far more programming of the registrations.

Many things to learn yet.  What kind of foot control options are there?

Sure, Yamaha has done a lot of testing, like live performances, but it's going to take a while for everyone to get used to it.
