New rotary speaker effect in the future?
« on: January 19, 2017, 06:13:51 AM »
The Japanese Yamaha site is advertising a version 1.5 update for the Montage. It mentions a new rotary speaker effect and organ voices! Iím sure the English language announcement will show up as soon as the NAMM embargo expires. Stay tuned.

That's a good point.

On ths S970, the rotary speaker DSP is not used for preset voices. So I think, they did not use the possibilities....

Seems Yamaha is acting based on all the criticisme on the montage organ sounds and rotary effect... if they make a huge jump forward, people will be happy..  but there where quite some people that backed away from buying the montage because of the bad organ sounds

Lets hope this also finds its way to the next generation Yamaha arrangers

Hi --

Came across these demo links for the new Montage rotary speaker effects:

I think the blues demo also shows off the FM jazz guitar (sounds like it).

Those sounded pretty good to me! I especially liked the Foolish Organ, since it sounded like "Won't Get Fooled Again." :)

Hi PJ,

I found another great demo of the possibilities of the Montage rotory speaker effect:

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N54Ef4vX6oo

The author of that demo (Peter Krischker from Easy Sounds) wrote to me, that this sound is not possible with Tyros/PSR, because we have only one DSP for user sounds, making it impossible to use overdrive and rotary speaker at the same time. :(

The Rock hard demo shows, how DSP parameter are changed in realtime. This is one thing which Yamaha forgot to realize on Tyros/PSR. Even the new live knobs do not allow to change drive, rotary speed or things like that.

Hi Uli --

Thanks for posting the link to the demo.

I suspect that the Tyros follow-on will support two insert effects per part, assuming that the successor has two tone generator chips like the Montage.

By "rotary speed," I'm assuming that you mean adjusting characteristics like ramp up/ramp down time via front panel knob. Yeah, it's a pain (on the S950) to dive into menus to mess with this. I've got a custom (USER) effect that has my favorite setting. Sure would be nice to make tweaks without menu diving.

Yamaha arrangers still need a Hammond scanner vibrato/chorus sim, too.

All the best -- pj

I definetly love these new organs and effects..

I hope we will see the same sounds and effects (2 dsp inputs for every single voice) in the Tyros6/Genos...

The Dsp power of the Montage is huge...

Re applying both rotary speaker and distortion - I thought it was possible to assign 2 of the insert effects to the same part (e.g. R1), though the order they are applied in is undefined?
