Title: Acoustic bass redundant
Post by: MadrasGiaguari on May 26, 2023, 04:59:40 PM
I make many style-songs, and while preparing one, starting from style Dreamy Ballad (Easy Listening).

All my modifications were Ok, but I'm having a problem with the bass track and haven't been able to solve: the acoustic bass (Acoustic Bass, Mega Voice) is redundant, too long, leaving a kind of halo after each note, which adds to the next note, resulting in an annoying resonance.

Made various checks:
-Rev: is at 0
-Effect: Compressor: disabled, but sound is still redundant
-Sound: tried with alternative Acoustic Basses (including non Mega Voices, Legacy, GM, ecc.): still the same problem
-Equalizer: tried to lower the bass frequencies: the halo remains

I came to the idea, then, that the recording of the Bass track was made by "holding" notes too long.

At this point, I could get (Assembly) the bass tracks from another style.

Any alternative idea?

Thank you

Angelo

Bass is a polyphonic instrument, but it's played as if it were monophonic. Did you check the length of each note didn't bleed into the start time of the next note? The bass notes shouldn't overlap. They should start exactly the same time as the previous note ends (when doing a hammer on note legato) or they should end *well* before the next note starts, especially when slapping or muting.

Or do you mean you simply used the existing bassline from that style? Because that's legato upright plucked bass... it's supposed to sound like that, what don't you like about the sound? Since it's only a root and fifth, it's easy enough to re-record the bassline with your own non megavoice patch, and modify that to your heart's content. It sounds like you want a more staccato bassline. Try JazzGuitarClub, which slap mutes between note changes.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to deduce what you mean by a 'halo', so this is my best guess.

Dear Mark,

thank you for your kind and precise answer.

About "halo" I didn't think of a proper word. Sorry for my poor English. I wanted to say that the bass notes stay too long, therefore overlapping the following note, therefore creating a disturbing bass frequencies redundancy

So I tried to replace (with the Assembly function) the original bass track with the one of Midnight Swing (which is more simple), and the result is very good for the style-song I was creating ("Colpevole" by Nicola Arigliano, a beautiful Italian jazz song: listen to it on YouTube).

It is lovely to may share ideas!

Ciao,

Angelo
