Title: Styles for Genos
Post by: Rubberdock on July 17, 2021, 11:16:56 PM
Are there any of you members who have experience in buying good styles for Genos.
I have been on the website but there are almost only styles for Tyros.
I know you can use Tyros 5 styles - but there must be someone who has made styles for Genos
I mostly play country and dance music. I hope you can help with good website

I think you may be reading too much into the difference Genos vs T5. A style is really the same regardless of what model it was originally designed for. Any improvement in voices or overall sound is going to come through anyway.

I agree. And there are thousands of styles on PSR TUT. main site for free!

..... A style is really the same regardless of what model it was originally designed for. Any improvement in voices or overall sound is going to come through anyway.

📝 I disagree, because a style made specially for Genos may also take advantage of many of the new sounds and drums not present in former models.
Then you have to edit and tweak, and even so, you may struggle hard to make it real good or as good as the original or professionals, or even to please personal taste.
Yes, there are zillions of free stuff for Yamaha keyboards, but the qulity differ quite a lot.
There is all from pure rubbish to fairly good playable ones, and then it's all those so or so in between...

Bought some song specific styles/registrations from Styles-24 Music. The quality of these styles can be obtained by watching the demo videos on the web site. The songs come with two sets of registrations, one for operation from the internal SSD and one from USB. Documentation on how to install all the data sets is included but only 1/3 of those purchased had an English version. Web site also has this info and if you use Chrome the site can be translated from German to your local language. I used USB and all works fine, you just have to follow the instruction exactly and watch out for typos.

A Word document is provided with lyrics, chords, keyboard change details and occasionally include music notation for song solos. If the song name has a “+” at the end, a midi file is also included – this file is a live recording and includes timing irregularities associated with live playing. You have to remember to turn your brain on when extracting a melody score part. Text document for display on Genos screen is also included.

Some work is required to convert the sheet music you have to that used in the song. For Love Is Blue the only differences where the initial key and grace notes, as I had already generated a MuseScore version, key change, grace notes and keyboard change details were easily done. Web site includes details on how to do a key change on the documentation files and the keyboard for use with the style.

For Reflections Of My Life, the solo was included in the word document but in Silence is Golden the 2 bars of “Ooohs” between the chorus and verse 3 (not in my sheet music) were not. This can be obtained from the midi file or demo video. For Nights In White Satin the flute solo is not included in the document file but is in the midi file. I have 6 versions of sheet music for this song, 3 have the solo but all are different and the solo in the song from Styles-24 is different again.

For Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, there are at least 14 different known sets of lyrics for this song ( 2 per verse)  and every performance and recording of the song is different. A 6/8 5 verse sheet music I have was close to the 12/8 3 verse (1,2&5 in mine) of the Style-24 version. No midi file with this song. Had to do an initial key change from C to F then from F to G for the last verse plus some lyric timing changes plus some parts played an octave higher. Had to insert 2 bars in at end of 1st verse chorus and about 6 at beginning of 3rd verse intro – this was in the documentation. The documentation file for keyboard changes does not match the demo song performance. Still working on this one.

There is some work involved in getting song specific variations to occur at the right point in the song but worth it. A lot less work than doing it from scratch yourself.

Hi Rubberdock and other posting forum members,

to answer your question I can give some additional information from my longer experience with 4 Styles providers (I'm a Genos keyboard player for 3 years, and other keyboards before) :

1) Styles-24:
Most of the styles are particularly good and they are as title-related styles very close to the original versions of the named artists.
As mentioned above, there are additional registration-banks for each of the styles. Only both together make it possible to play the song correctly.
However, it is necessary to play the whole song exactly (!!) as described in the instructions (= DOC- and TXT-file, describing how to play the individual registrations). A deviation from this playing procedure leads results in a performance which does not sound anymore correctly; a change of MAIN variations (differently as to the description) is not the right way.
The live played and recorded video on Youtube allows you to follow the process of playing the whole song.
There are no sheet music available. Therefore, if the keyboard player needs the notation, he has to buy it from a different seller. Often the notations are different than shown in the video of Styles-24. Midifiles are not offered for all styles. If available for the song, you can use a notation software (Sibelius, Musescore, etc.) to create the notes yourselve, however, part of the packages have special midifiles where notes can be shown on the display of the Genos.
When practicing the song in parts, you must always take the song passages from the beginning of a MAIN variation, otherwise there will be a mess.

2)Soundwonderland (SWL)
Here is the link:
https://soundwonderland.de/pages/de/shop/styles.php
Focus on styles are different genres of music that are offered. These are of very high quality and very good instrumentation, also with a lot of attention to details (!!). The styles are not title related, but are programmed to play a variety of titles (title lists as suggestions are often included). The application of the styles are shown in Youtube videos and described verbally, also in English. Sometimes there are only MP3 files with audio examples. Sometimes sheet music of own SWL compositions are provided.

3) D.O.O..
These styles (they are not packages like Styles-24)let you recognize the title-related song by the INTROs and ENDINGs, the MAINs (mostly 4, 6 or 8 bars long), can be repeated as you like, are loops where tracks are switched off or on in the MAINs. Text files are included. The quality is very different, the audio examples do not show the styles in detail, but are parts from a midifile. D.O.O. mainly sells Midifiles.

4) Keyboard Software
Here is the link:
https://www.keyboardsoftware.nl/
Besides the title-related styles there are registration-banks and notes with stailed instructions how to operate the registrations with the styles. Those are packages similar to Styles-24. In addition, so-called LAP styles are offered, where special sounds (voices), audio files and pad files are used, but they have to be loaded into the EXPANSION drive via the YEM (Yamaha Expansion Manager).

Just a note for Styles-24 midi files, MuseScore3.6.2 does not always read and display the midi file correctly but Cubase Elements 11 does.

Hello rubberdock and thank you for the explanations from MikeS and Runner4Fun.

A small addition to the point ".. follow the instructions exactly" from Runner4Fun.
Our main variations are also title-related and, as in the original, use strings or wind instruments in a verse, for example, and play their own phrase in the accompaniment.
If you switch to Variation B one measure too early, the accompaniment is one measure ahead and the phrase also starts one measure too early.

You can see which titles have songs on our video list, among other things. If there is a T in the "incl. Midi" column, there is a midi that was imported with the style. If there is also a + (T +) after the T, additional information on the change of registration is given in the Score Midi.

You can find the video list here: https://styles-24.de/

Since registrations are also supplied with our styles, the link from the registrations to the style data must work for each customer. Therefore a certain sorting of the style data is necessary.
We have now prepared this folder structure for two older demo styles for Genos and SX900.

After the ZIP file has been unzipped, simply copy the copied -Styles-24 folder directly (root directory) to a USB stick.

The titles are loaded via the registrations.

- Select "REGIST" and the "USB1" socket in the top left of the display,
- Search for the title REG "Little Drummer Boy" or "Wonderful World Beautiful People" in the "REGIST" folder and select it,
- Select "EXIT" and Reg1.

Registration 1 loads all data (style, text, song, sounds, effects, etc.)

The two demo styles for Genos, Tyros5, Tyros4, Sx900, PSR-S970 / 975 can be downloaded directly.

Pedro,
Thanks for your additional information.
I checked the homepage of Styles4K and had a look in each corner (incl. FAQ).
I would be grateful for some more information:
What elements will be sold?
The style-file only ?
Or additonally a registration bank with Right/Left hand voices ?
Text files (to display text and notes) ?
Sheet music ?

Just a note for Styles-24 midi files, MuseScore3.6.2 does not always read and display the midi file correctly but Cubase Elements 11 does.

Mike,
When you say "display the MIDI file" do you mean as data or music notation?
Thanks.
Dave

The music notation displayed by MuseScore and Cubase Elements can be very different and that's ignoring MuseScore sometimes showing all notes being twice as long as they should be.

Attached is a comparison of the Elements and MuseScore Midi score notation and actual score. Bar 9 of the actual score is bar 10 in Elements and bars 17+18 in MuseScore.

Hi
As Far as i am concerned The Do-de styles are best if you take away those horid pan pipes in the demos.
The backgrounds are very good.
The rest are a lot of rubbish in my view.

There is nothing cheesy about a pan pipe if it is played with the right expression but I know you are not a sit and play person so won't get the same feeling when just sitting playing romantic ballads that these sounds really come alive with. Also film backing music.
