Title: Yamaha Keyboard DSB adjustments ?.
Post by: Graham UK on May 10, 2021, 10:19:09 AM
I would like to be able to understand more about DSP adjustment effects.
I do a lot of style tweaking regarding style ballance and Reverb effects etc: on my T5-76.

The T5 contains a large selection of DSP settings and lot of these I would like more knowledge of which ones to use.
Understanding that DSP is a complicated subject and any adjustments made are download to personal taste.

Any feedback is apprciated.

Is this a typo or should it be DSP.

DSP settings can be added to voices to enhance them or give different effects. The best thing to do is select a voice and then go through the DSP sections and listen. When you find ones you like make a note of them. I like to use Cross delay 2 on my Piano voices.

As a basis and for a start, it is good to use the factory effect settings. Setting up your own DSP requires knowledge and familiarity with some rules. Of course, it’s all a matter of taste.
To understand some general things, check out these two videos. (eng subtitle)

One point worth remembering that changed between Tyros and Genos.

On Tyros, if you make adjustments to effect parameters then you need to save a "User Effect" with those adjustments, and use that "User Effect" with saved voices including registrations.

On Genos, adjustments to effect parameters are saved when you save a voice or a registration, so you don't need to use a "User Effect" for this any more.

The exception is effects applied to style parts - those adjustments can't be saved in a style or registration so you still need to use User Effects there. Helpfully though Genos supports 30 User Effects compared to just 10 on Tyros.

Hello Graham --

I wrote a series of blog posts about using PSR, Tyros, Genos effects:

http://sandsoftwaresound.net/edit-save-psr-effects-2/
http://sandsoftwaresound.net/psr-effects-electric-piano-3/

You might have already read them, but the links might help others.

I agree that DSP effects are a broad subject. Which aspect of effects are you most interested in? Questions like when to use a particular effect (amp sim, distortion, delay, etc.)?

One way to learn is to study Yamaha's voice and style programming. Maybe choose one or two styles that you really like, then explore the effect programming through the mixer. I sometimes do this myself and if I find an effect that I really like, I write down all of the parameter values in a text file. That way I can search through my notes. Also, I will read about that effect type on the Web whether the article applies directly to PSR, Tyros or Genos, or not. There's lots of good background information on the Web, especially about effect plug-ins.

Good luck with your explorations!
