Title: Which headphones do you recommend?
Post by: hans1966 on February 17, 2021, 01:48:25 AM
Hi Guys, I have AMERICAN AUDIO HP-550 headphones, which after a period of time (20 to 40 minutes) I feel moletia in the pinna of my ears. I see that its size is not that big, and therefore it does not cover the ear well. I am deciding between these two brands for their price (obviously I listen to other alternatives) which of them do you recommend?

Hans,

I like the new Bose 700 headphones. They are more expensive then the ones you mentioned, but are the best headphones I have ever had.

Closed Back Ath M50X ( I have this )
Open back DT 990 Pro ( or lower )

Open back is good for mixing
Closed back is recommended for recording.
Regards Norman.

I'd recommend Grado SR60 or higher. Very little colouration of the sound and even from bass to treble. You can't drive them too loud, but there again, you shouldn't be listening too loud on headphones anyway.

hans1966. I have ATM40X which I find very good. They have a little upper bass bloom but this is adjusted with my Tyros 5 EQ. Remaining frequency range is excellent.
Higher price does not guarrentee better sound as my second pair proves Sennheizer HD206 only £23 and to my ears they are a bargin.

We all hear and prefer differently so suggest you wait until you can listen to a few headphones.

I would recommend the Sennheiser HD599. I can't fault them and they sound really excellent on my SX900.
My previous Headphones were also Sennheiser whic I'd had for 37 years and that's becasuse they "speak" quality.

Best wishes,
Richard.

If you don´t want to spend a lot of money, I have been using for a few years  "SHURE SRH550DJ", they are very suitable, good sound quality, they don´t  generate to much bass effect, witch cold be a problem when editing/composing,  you can find spare parts for it quite easily, like ear pads, cables etc. Shure produces also very good microphones.

Hi Guys, thanks for your recommendations. I always try to use a very low volume on my headphones. I work doing MIDI sequences, and in addition to creating some songs from scratch, the next step is to spend considerable time doing the final mix.

The problem with my AMERICAN-AUDIO HP-550 headphones, is that after a while they start to squeeze the outside of my ears, which makes hearing unbearable.

My wish is to get large and comfortable headphones, which cover the entire contour of the ears without crushing them, since this way I can work several hours without this discomfort.   Regards.  Hans

A lot of sound gurus look down their nose at Bose products, think they are overpriced for the spec. But I have the Bose 700 headphones and they are very comfortable and sound great to me.

I use KOSS UR18 for my keyboard. They came out several years ago, and they don't have the best sound. BUT they are ultralight! Since I have to bend forward a lot to check screen and buttons due to low vision, heavy headphones just slide forward, but these ultra light ones stay in place, and are so light that I almost don't fell them on my head. THe UR18 can still be found in some stores. They are over ear, as studio headphones should be in my opinion. But we all hear differently, just as with glasses, you can't use another persons glasses :)

AKG 240 Studio
Semi-open backs with large ear cups and don't apply much pressure to the side of the head. Comfortable to wear for extended periods.
https://www.amazon.com/AKG-K240STUDIO-Semi-Open-Professional-Headphones/dp/B0001ARCFA

Closed back designs of headphones usually, but not always fit tighter to the side of the head to seal in the sound to prevent leakage while recording and wearing them for longer periods of time may cause some discomfort. I couldn't find any information on the current American Audio HP550 you have if they are open or closed, but from their looks and it seems they are geared towards DJ usage, I'm guessing a closed back.

Headphones when new can clamp your ears and be uncomfortable.

ANSWER. When not using mount them on a head shape article as per my link.
Clamping wil ease after a few weeks.
