Title: Using the Bonus Music Finder Database on a PSR-SX900
Post by: tbaroghel on November 14, 2020, 06:37:01 PM
Hello from a newbie,

I downloaded the bonus MFD and the PSR-SX900 converted it to a Play list as expected - so far so good. One thing I noticed is that a lot of styles were translated into a diabolic Salsa instead of something more appropriate. Did I make a mistake choosing the MFD for PSR-950 ? Can I do better ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards from France,

Thierry

Hi there T. good to catch you here!!

Hello Keith,

As you can see, I have followed your path: Thomann generously accepted the return of the Korg EK-50 and I went for the SX900. I appreciate that the SX700 is the best in terms of price ratio, but Chord Looper convinced me - a cure for my weak left hand practice. Overall, I find the SX really comfortable and really excellent sound-wise.

Indeed, as you told me, style management seems far more straightforward than on the Korg, with many sources available.

Speak to you soon,

Thierry

I'm so glad you took my advice, sure you will NOT be disappointed with a Yamaha over a Korg, well, for what and how you want to use it. I do happen to like both, for very different reasons of course.

Yes, with your condition and the fact your really woodwind/guitar bias, then the 900 with looper really will suit your needs + there are other extras you might use including greater memory on the 900.

As others have pointed out there is a whole host of info. tutorials and files you can get from here, so you should be fine.

There are lots of people here with FAR MORE skill and knowledge than myself, as i am very 'load and play' and am very lazy with regard to what these things are really capable of, ( I only skim the surface...lol ) but if I can help in anyway, then do get in touch.

Notice with the MFD files that a registration bank is automatically created for every playlist entry that is listed for each song ( registrations are needed to 'drive' a playlist entry )  These banks have 7 of the 8 buttons empty are handy to edit and resave the song for different verses, endings etc. using these empty slots.
Yes, some of the style and voice substitutions are not great ( even using the UK Tyros 5 MFD files )  so it is good to be able to re-save with perhaps other styles and voices of your own choice, but I do find these files a great base to work from as a stating point.

Best regards and enjoy your new Yamaha - Keith

Hi Thierry,

have you already downloaded the "SX900 Bonus Playlist"? (Scroll down to "Other Downloads" on this site:)
>>> https://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/musical_instruments/keyboards/arranger_workstations/psr-sx900/downloads.html#product-tabs

This download contains 462 Registration bank files (.rgt), organized in 9 Playlist files (.tsv). (You don't necessarily have to use the Playlist function, you can of course also call up the Registration banks directly.) Note: In order for the Playlist to work properly, please be sure to observe the instructions in the ReadMe file.

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I did download the playlist, and so far found it really interesting, be it to simply play known tunes or to learn how they were set up. I used it as a playlist, as I quickly found my marks between styles, registrations banks, songs, multipads and playlists. I also experimented chord loops associated (saved with) registrations, and driven in a sequence thru a pedal (very comfortable). Now to recordings !

Thanks,

Thierry
