Title: UPS - uninterruptible Power Supply
Post by: markstyles on August 04, 2020, 04:32:46 PM
A device which we should all have - especially if we live in an area with dirty AC power..  For decades now, I have used a UPS=uninterruptible power supply..  Basically it is a box with a Large battery some circuitry..  The AC goes into the box. is converted to DC and stored in the battery.  It usually has several AC outputs.. The output side converts the DC back to very clean AC.  If you live in a rural area, or an old house, you will be more prone to glitches, or dips in current..

Well somehow, I unplugged, an then plugged my GENOS straight into my pre-war apartment's AC receptacle.    A glitch completely crashed my GENOS,  and now it won't even boot up.  To make matters worse, with the pandemic the Yamaha affiliated repair shop in NYC is only open 2 days a week, 6 hours a day.  They said it would be at least 2 weeks, or longer, because they are backed up.  They wanted a $160 deposit, (that's to start), if there is more damage, it's gonna be steep, But I'm opening they just have to replace the programable Operating system chip.  I tried to re-install update, but that wouldn't work either.

Prices vary for a UPS.  Depending on the capacity of the battery you get.  Most UPS will work for quite a few minutes after power dies, (giving you time to save projects on computer, kids.  You really don't need more than 5 minutes..  I use a brand  called APS.

I would call having a UPS a necessity..  This could have saved me from this repair, if I hadn't have slipped up.

Hello,

I live in Florida, the lightning capitol of the world, and strongly believe in UPS's.  I have them powering my televisions, computers, stereos, and of course my Genos.  They also saved my equipment once when an outside transformer failed. I got an alarm and showed only 84 volts instead of the normal 120. I knew something was wrong when my refrigerator was making funny sounds!  Besides being a surge suppressor and power conditioner it's also nice to have the battery backup. I seldom ever have to reboot my Genos or computers.  My computer and monitor can run 45 minutes off the battery!

They have really dropped in price the last few years and aren't nearly as heavy as before. No more 20lb battery inside! I am a fan!!!    -charley
