Title: DX7 Kalimba voice
Post by: Amxf5 on July 10, 2020, 02:24:42 PM
Is there a DX7  Kalimba voice on board? Looking to recreate the sound on Toto's Africa. Thanks for any help!

Hi,

I just finished a cover of this song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5lXmE-oJCg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5lXmE-oJCg)
I don't remember how the Kalimba sounded on the DX7 (Haven't played one since early 80's),
but I used the GS Kalimba sound on this song and thought it worked all right.

Cheers

Thanks Jugge, your cover sounds great!  So, was that kalimba sound you used from the legacy voices on the Genos? I didn't find any labeled GS or DX-7, but whatever you used did sound very good.
So were all the voices and drum patterns stock Genos as well?  Great job.

Hello Amxf5 and thank you for your kind words.

The GS sounds can be a bit tricky to find as you cannot select them as a "panel voice".
If you go into the mixer and select the song tab, you should be able to find the GS folder.
Yes, all voices are stock Genos.

Cheers

The Kalimba sound of Toto's Africa was played using a Yamaha GS1, which predated the DX7. Steve Porcaro pointed out that it was impossible to recreate that sound using a DX7.

We mere mortals are happy approximating that sound. You may want to give my attached voice a try. It's a layer of Genos preset samples of Kalimba, Marimba and Flute. It includes the 4th ready for that Africa motive.

PS: Note that the insertion effect (delay) is disabled, because YEM does not create a pack with the correct parameters (just another YEM quirk). If you want a delay effect you have to configure your own.

Dromeus, my pc is unable to open a ppf file. Is there another format?  Thanks!

You need Yamaha Expansion Mangager (YEM) to import this Pack Project File (.ppf) and install it on the Genos. Have you already installed YEM and are you familiar with this software?
