Title: Style or loop that had old scratchy LP (record) sound?
Post by: jimlaing on May 21, 2020, 01:58:08 AM
Hi ..I seem to rememeber a Style (or multipage?) that had the sound of an old record - that is the "clicks and pops" of playing
an old record.  can't seem to find this on Genos .... anyone know how I might find or generate this sound on Genos
(other than sampling from a turntable playing a scratchy record?!  :)

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim, are you sure that it is a style? It could be a audiostyle. I think a audio linked multipad could do the trick. E,g. on freesound, org you could search for old gramophone wav or mp3. Jusy my 2 cents

Hi Jim,

I searched the "Drum/SFX Kit List" in the Genos Data List for the term "Vinyl" and found the drum instrument "Vinyl Noise": It"s in "DanceKit" on the note #26 (= D0). This is one octave below the standard Snare (which is on D1 in most Kits).

If you load the "DanceKit" in eg Right 1 and set "Upper Octave" to  -1 or  -2, you should be able to play that sound.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

I remember it too, but I think it was a voice. In the XG effects folder?

Cheers,
Fred

I agree with Chris, it's a drum kit.

Hi Jim it is an old IDC style called 20's Swing 78rpm. I can't share it because it is probably on Yamaha Music Soft site and therefore Copywrite.

@jimlaing
Hi Jim,

please see also these two threads:

https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,55289.msg431301.html#msg431301

https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,53633.msg417939.html#msg417939

The styles "AcousticRock" and "FunkPopRock" mentioned in these previous threads are also on Genos (in "Rock" and "Pop" style categories).

P.S.
You could create a (looped) MIDI Multi Pad with this sound "Vinyl Noise" (note D0 in DanceKit) if you want to use it regardless of a Style.

Best regards,
Chris

Hi all,

the Yamaha Style "20'sSwing78rpm" also uses the "Vinyl Noise" sound of the "DanceKit" (on Channel 9 / Rhy1).

If you look into the Style data, you can see that this sound (note "D0") is triggered every second measure with Velocity 92 (see attached picture).

Chris

Thanks all for the various info and ideas!  I did find the 'scratchy record' sound in the Dance kit, as one person mentioned.  And yes, it was the 20s old 78rpm style that I was remembering.

In the end, I decided to sample the scratchy record sound from - a scratchy record!!  I had a turntable and a bunch of "not-very-important" records, so I sampled about 10 sec. from the start and end of a record, and had a decent example of "scratchy record" sound from that, for use in my project!  I just recorded from the turntable (didn't even worry about the RIAA EQ curve) to a digital recording device.

Thanks again all,
Jim
