Michael,

I have read this announcement. They say that they will show Genos 2.0. That does not mean that it is already released at that time. ;)

No, you are right. Seems to be true. :)

I believe the official announcement indicated it would be released in the winter. Winter in North America starts on the evening of December 21st. I wouldn't expect it any earlier than that based on when they actually released 1.4.

My bet is that 2.0 will be released in November. That's winter for a lot of us in the northern hemisphere.

Here's my original prediction (https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,49253.msg385846.html#msg385846).

We'll see if I can go 2 for 2.

Cheers,

So far i have never seen much cooperation between these two Yamaha divisions

Till now, on the official european website, there were on the download page, versions 1.30, 1.40 and 1.41. All those three versions were available. But now, if you go to website, only 1.41 version is available, which means something is happening. Something is being prepared.

Wow... Quick installation via YEM, using USB stick. So if you want to make incremental updates to your keyboard's expansion packs, you can with the new 2.6 version to export only the content you want and the keyboard will no more formatting the keyboard when you will install the quick pack... Very Nice.

Presumably YEM will need to be updated to cater for the memory upgrade and in the quoted quicker importing/ exporting of content (reducing the requirement for reformatting).
So the new OS must include changes to work with the new YEM hence the not very informative English but "Correspond to YEM difference installation"?
Also user effect max no. extended suggests more memory slots than 10 currently reserved for user DSP's which should help when needing to chain more than 1 DSP with parameter changes.

Maybe the new ppi file exported by the new YEM 2.6 will contain the info, if file is a quick installation or a full installation. Or maybe they will create a new extension, like qpi, or something like that, which the new Genos OS will knew it is only an update to existing expansion and the content will be added. I suppose

John, how do you know this? Is there a video of these updates? The link is nothing but a bunch of pictures and descriptions, which is good too! Where are you getting your information about "pan pipes and second-hand trombones" or are you speaking figuratively:)?

Initially, weren't there only 20 new styles. Now there are 50!! I just hope they're not all Dance and EDM - totally useless to a lot of us (not to disparage those who are proficient in those styles of course :)!)

Looks like Yamaha is listening to us. Yey!!!

Hi
Who wants pan pipes?? Lol!!!!!! ;D
...

I want a good Pan Pipes ...

As you see in these two pictures, always almost one PanPipes singer is present in an orchestra of ethnic music in Romania (Moldova) (East Europe). It is the left-most singer, always. I want to reproduce such an orchestra, but the sounds from our keyboards are not so realistic as the players perform. So, some good SA2 instruments like Pan pipes, violins, clarinets, sax, trumpets and trombone will make a good pack of orchestra sound.

"Lautarii" orchestra from Moldova.

"Advahov brothers orchestra" from Moldova.

These are two of the best orchestras from Moldova.

I MUST say again: If someone does not need something in an arranger that does not mean anyone else does not need it! An arranger is not sell only on some countries or some continents. It is made for ALL the world. And music is made by a lot of instruments.
For example we do not use BagPipes. 99% of this instrument is played in Scotland. Let it be there in keyboard, because I'm sure Genos is sold in Scotland, too, and they need that voice. And the examples are a lot ;)

Best regards,
Vali

But the vocal voice is good for "once upon a time in the west".

Hi
Would be nice if we had some quality packs from certain synths , like Juno etc. Like the soft synths, Syntronic from IK Multimedia and Arturia, Korg.
Better guitars and saxes that to not go thin at the high ends
Like Oxford says, the bagpipes are not that good, very thin in my view. If you want to emulate  "The Outlander" it does not come up to that quality.
Movie type version of  "Over the sea to Sky"
The Genos is not a cheap machine.
Overall i am not moaning as the Genos sounds are great.
The only way to get more quality is VST 3 mixed in with the Genos via Cubase or something like it.

All the Best
John :)

PS  Note!! "On my opinion"

Hi John,

tyrosman probably means the (German) website of Peter Schips ( www.cms-sounddesign.de ).

Here is the free content (in German language):

http://cms-sounddesign.de/page101.html
http://cms-sounddesign.de/page132.html
http://cms-sounddesign.de/page16.html

And here are the same sites in English:

http://cms-sounddesign.de/page101_en.html
http://cms-sounddesign.de/page132_en.html
http://cms-sounddesign.de/page16_en.html

These free Voices / Packs (.ppf format) are for YEM-compatible Keyboards only (Tyros5 / Genos / PSR-SX900/700 / PSR-S970/975/770/775/670 / PSR-A3000).

Some Voices / Samples are additionally available in .wav/.aif format.

Note: To my knowledge, Peter Schips does NOT offer any voices in the .uvn/.uvd format anymore (Tyros3/4 Custom Voice format).

Best regards,
Chris

I've been suggesting this for years... so it's finally going to happen on the Genos.  I hope this will carry over to the sx900.  It will be so much easier to edit Multi Pads. (just like the style Parts and Song Parts)

Thank you Yamaha for re-writing the OS so these kind of improvements (all of them) can be added.  Yamaha has demonstrated they are listening to arranger owners/players.

Big thanks Chris , I will have a look now

There are many really great paid ones a well and very nicely priced.

I don't have any of the synths but I have all of their organs and the quality is great.

Hi Chris and Tyrosman
Big thanks for that tip. :)

There are some handy sounds to be had in there especially if the rock guitars sound like the example.
I like the Jarre Revolution hammer on Anvil sound , Reminds me of the London Docklands Concert ,which i will never forget.
Those oriental flutes are the business also Similar to the opening of Berlin's " You Don't Know which is one of my favourite 80s songs.
Love the Queen  guitar.
I will give these a try after the house chore's are done later today.
I would love to see a midi to Style converter on the new update. Press a button and it's done!! Big Lol to that!!!  Pipe dream ,hopefully not Pan!! ;D

From my point of view is that every time i am on a cruise for a holiday ,the music is always old music standards from the 30s,40s etc.
I have yet to go on a cruise and hear Black Sabbath , 70s pop or even Pink Floyd music Soul , Tamla.
At least when going to the Carribean the reggae/ska  is fantastic and happy .
Is it me or am i getting younger!!!??????? Nice to hear the Stones wouldn't It. " The Moon is Up"!!  " She's a Rainbow". "roll up, Roll up"
At 69 I fear that i will have to be 110 to get what I want!!! Yes , I will be probably loving Angels instead or something much worse than that!!! :-[
It is a case now  " Fancy you had It"!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

All the best
John :)

YEM must be used.
Video shows how to save more * .ppf in one * .ppi. That * .ppi is transferred to a USB stick and written to Genos.

All my expansion voices including those from CMS transfer Yem to Genos wirelessly so if wireless is connected, transfer via usb stick should not be needed.

@ugawoga
Hi John,

thank you for your detailed feedback!

P.S.
If you want to use several of the CMS "Single Voice Packs", you do NOT need to import all those .ppf files by using "Import PACK" function to YEM:

You can also make a NEW (empty) Pack first (or use an existing Pack) and then import several .ppf files to this Pack by using "Import CONTENT" function. For example, you could make one Pack that contains all CMS Gutar voices, one Pack with all CMS Synth voices and so on. :)

Best regards,
Chris

@John, @Chris
That's right, we can choose multiple ways to enter material into Genos. We can via WIFI, we can individually ppf or some other way. We choose an option that is better for us.  ;)

Hi guys (and girls),

good news: I just got an invitation from my instrument dealer for a Genos Firmware V2.0 Workshop/Presentation next tuesday (5th) by Manni Pichler. So it seems that at least a beta version, that one can present is already here (in Germany).
Stay tuned, I'll take notes and will try to give you a report.

Very excited for you. Have a wonderful time
Trying out 2.0

I will wait for a week or two after the release to watch
Few Demos and learn exactly what are the
Changes

Believe it or not, I'm still playing on the first Firmware Version
And never upgraded. I simply felt it was not worth
While at the moment because I'm still not even half way
Exploring the Genos and I have it for a year now!
I will surely upgrade to this version because I feel this is the real deal. I would appreciate if everyone can post video links as they start to pop everywhere.  I'm truly excited
For this update

Yes. But it has some nice new features! This is really the way to go, make a good, sturdy, well designed keyboard, like our Genos, and give it new updates. This makes sense, it is good for the environment. We can have the hardware (the keyboard) for many years, and yet have new updates that give it new features. Great! :)

I really don’t understand what is new about the voices, I see on the data list file that there is a S.art 2 trombone for example. I heard the S.Art 2 Latin Pan flute premium pack demo and if they are referring to “Zampoña” when they said “Latin Pan flute” I can tell you that it doesn’t sound like the real thing. Believe me, I don’t need to go to Perú because I’m from Peru :) and I heard a lot of zampoña players in my life.
Here in Lima you don’t even need to go to a special place or something like that to hear this beautiful instrument, you can hear it if you take a bus, because there are a lot of street musicians in Lima that play zampoña, and they usually go from one bus to another playing the instrument and asking to the passengers for a little collaboration, sometimes they even play the charango at the same time.

Well, I’m not saying that the update will be bad, I know that they will give you the update for free, but I would be interesting a least for me, to have new S.Art2 authentic voices (Even if I have to pay for these) instead of having always voices that sounds close to real thing but maybe they weren’t created using the real local instrument.

Hi Rodrego

I just think that these new voice packs is just a filler to pad the update out.
Recycling old packs.
I would like to see more realism in certain instruments and would pay for them.
I find it weird that Yamaha packs are so expensive for what they are and Easysounds are just as good at a third of the price.
I find it great that i can use VST as well.
All in all the update looks great.

Yeah, it does.  8)
I think we should 'keep cool' until we have it installed before we give it any judgement, good or bad.
Sounds and packs included, if it's from what's possible to buy in the Y-shop, it will be a great bonus for those that have not bought it already.
But, there is also 50 completely new styles included, so as well as OS update and new features, there are various goodies for all Genos'ers. 👍😊
Just a few days before we get the X-Mas gift now..... exciting! 🎅

Hi Toril

It is best  to keep the updates to the latest.
Do not be afraid as it only benefits the machine.
As long as the instructions are read and understood updates are easy.
I do think that people that have updates go wrong, is because  they are impatient and interfere before the machine has loaded the update.
It can take a while for an update to install and the latest update will probably take five minutes or more as it is quite a big one.

All the best
John :)

Hi, If you want realistic woodwind instruments I highly recommend you to try Audio Modeling Swam VST, it’s amazing, it works well with my s970 but thanks to the AT of the Genos keyboard, you can enjoy even more than me and the other PSR S users this incredible VST, because you can easily set this AT to control things like the growl or whatever you want.

I am still not able to download  updates on my Genos as I’ve mentioned before on the forum.  I now have to rely on Yamaha UK sending me  updates they’ve downloaded on their  usb’s. They have refused to check my keyboard to see what the problem is and I’m not happy about that but it’s the best I could achieve. I will  try to install V2 but I don’t hold out much hope as it wasn’t possible with the previous upgrades.

I don’t understand. You can update your keyboard when you have bc s proper USB, right?

If so, the keyboard is not the problem, your downloading is the problem. What steps do you take to download and create a correct USB stick?

Hi Alfred,

in some (very rare) cases updates can not be installed on the Genos, even if the Update file has been properly downloaded, unzipped and a suitable USB stick has been used.

You then have to perform a "special reset" (where absolutely ALL User data is deleted from the Genos). After that, the current update should be able to install properly.

Yamaha does not allow to publicly post the details of this reset method on the internet. But if needed, you can PM me on this topic.

BUT, as mentioned by Fred, IF a Update WORKS on your Genos with a USB stick you received from Yamaha, and the file on the stick is the official Update file (same as available on the Genos download page), the problem must be your download / unzip / copy & paste method, or the USB stick you had used ...

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Fred,
I’ve done all the procedures recommended
Used Yamaha approved usb
Formatted usb on genos,
Downloaded to root file from Mac and also  from Windows on another occasion.
Put usb into Genos
Pressed appropriate start up buttons
Genos can’t read or see the update file.

I’ve updated twice now using yamahas’  usb and download they sent me and hey presto no problem.

Thanks Chris, I’ll email you for the reset info.

Hello Alfred

I have been following your problems re. updating your Genos,I also have a Genos and previously a Tyros 5 and I've never had any problems with updates ,just a thought ,have you tried writing to the USB stick you are using for transferring the update files, this would verify that your Genos can write and read the USB stick, providing you are following the correct update procedure you should have no problems, the update file must be unzipped after downloading from the Yamaha website and the written to the root of the USB drive.

Hi Alfred
If what you do is to the book , i would not be satisfied with my Genos.
I would go for a new replacement.
You should not have to go through all of this putting updates in.
You are not getting what you paid for and it is not doing what it should be doing. To me that is a legal argument
A computer is a computer ,so everyone should have the same.
Stop being palmed off with quick fixes. Afterall you have paid well over £3,000.

All you have to do is download , unzip, follow simple instructions and wait . That's it.
Something is not right. If Yamaha are sending you a usb fix , then they know something is not right.

All the best
John

Good one, Vali.

I was also going to suggest that he disable his antivirus software during the download. I'm not sure if a text file travels with a file after it is scanned by antivirus software, telling the antivirus software that "everything is okay." If I'm right, that file would alter the update just enough to screw things up.

... Just another route to take, I find it hard to believe its a Genos fault.

Genos v 1.40 to 1.41 Update quote:

Quote
-The function "Part On/Off" (for the Left, Right 1, Right 2, Right 3 or Mic part) is newly assignable to the foot pedals.

-Fixed a problem in which the detail settings of the "Part On/Off" function for each one of the ASSIGNABLE buttons would not be loaded properly from the Registration Memory or System Backup.

-Fixed a problem in which some assignable Functions on the MIDI External Controller display would not work properly.

-Fixed a problem in which the firmware update does not work properly in certain situations.

-Fixed other problems.

I don't find it hard ;)

Did you compare the two files?

You have a downloaded file on a USB, and the file on the USB Yamaha created. Compare them. If they’re not the same, then the problem is the downloading.

Uli, those discussions about fault of installing Genos updates was on 1.40 version. A lot of users has this problem installing 1.40 update. Now it is 1.41, which they said it fixed the problem, which, definitely, was NOT a user fault. Now, he try installing 1.41 version, but he has the same issue as 1.40, this is what I understand. In this case, seems some series of Genos has another problem, which they did not solved in 1.41 update file.
This is what I understand, if is NOT an unzipped process fault. That's why I say to him to check the unzipped file's hash. This is the only way to see that GenosSetup.Prg file is the correct one.

BE AWARE: These days a new Ransomware virus is walking on the www  :-\ ... Take care of what emails attaching files you open! Check twice the sender's mail address, to be sure it is the correct mail (the all address "abc@acb.com")

Alfred, Mac does not need to give you the hash information. I gave you a link (up, in my post). Access that link and upload your Mac unzipped file. It will give you a hash string. Compare to what I gave you in my post, it has to be the same!

musicians who do play and enjoy the Genos, and going forward after the update, could be very bummed out,
if the update doesn't full fill their expectations. In the end, for me, it's all about playing this incredible Yamaha Keyboard, The Genos.
How much better, can we imagine and want from this keyboard.

.... How much better, can we imagine and want from this keyboard.

Where does the imagination and desire for progress and developement stop?
It's the users whishes, exploration and feedback that make that Yamaha and others fix and add more possabilities to all that's already there.
Every time we think it's not much more to add, we get surprised by all new stuff we get. I hope this developements continue, it's exciting. 😊👍

Example (Personal wishlist):
We can see left hand played chords at the screen.
I'm not any good at read or play stright out off musicsheet, need some time to rehearsal. When chords for a song is glued in my mind ain a certain key, it might happen I need to transpose.
In that case, I would like to see in display what chords comes out off the keyboard and not the actually played ones. An option to swap what show up in display, played or sounding chords, would be great.
Yamaha support told me that this was complete impossible to do, and the engineers would not listen if they delivered the wish.
As long as there is other brands that shows the chords we hear at the display when transpose, it's probably not impossible. Probably not many users that miss it or see any benefit, or simply that the right person has not mentioned it to the engineers.
We'll never know what happens next, maybe an option at next update? 😎

Exactly, Korg is doing in this way, it shows transposed chord, not the pressed one!

They could make something like that :

Yeah, and so did Roland BK7-M when connected KMA via midi. (Sold it, so don't help much now)

Looks like I'm not the only one that would like this feature, and I think the programmers would have a easy task to make it happen. 👍😊
But, if they don't know about users whishes at the developement department, we'll probably never get it.
Let's see if this forum is monitored. 🙄

Not a bad idea, Jonny. How do they handle a chord such as an A7(b9) that already has brackets? All those brackets could get confusing. It would look something like:

A7(b9) (G7(b9))

Kind of confusing at a quick glance. For me, they would need to put the chords in two different colored boxes.

Did you happen to read if this update is irreversible? Although almost no one will want to do that? But just good to know, I guess?

Only the chord that we hear will be enough for me, as we see at other brands, but if possible to choose between pressed and outgoing chord would be great. 😎

Updates are irreversible I think.

Presumably a factory reset puts the keyboard back to v1.0 so that must be a way of 'reversing' any update ...

Cheers

I don't think so. Factory reset erases all contents and settings but does not revert the firmware back. Works like this in every device. When you reset your phone or iPad to factory settings, the latest OS remains on it.

As I showed in that picture, It was an idea, thinking that some users might know which is the transposed chord and which is the pressed one! They can replace brackets with "[]" ;)
But, as Jonny said, it could be only the transposed chord, as other brands shows when you transpose the keyboard.
The choice of showing could be user's one, in general setting it could be a radio button
;)

Vali

  • Show Original Chord
  • Show Transposed Chord
  • Show Both O [T]
;)

Vali

Very nice idea Vali...
