How exciting ...... please let us know your first thoughts! My questions are:

+ Out of the box, does it sound more like T5 or Genos in terms of tone / EQ etc
+ Does the keybed feel more like T5 or PSR-S

Eileen,

I have some questions for you.

Once you install the sx900 in YEM,

1. Is there still 1GB of expansion memory with the 4 preinstalled packs that come with the keyboard?

2. Is it possible to uninstall the preinstalled packs to increase the expansion memory to larger than the 1GB of memory?

3. If the preinstalled packs are in a separate memory block... is it possible to uninstall the preinstalled packs and replace them with other packs?

Thanks in advance.

Joe H

Hi Joe,
Will get back to you on this but as you can download the packs to put into YEM I would think they are installed on the 1 Gb and as these will be lost on loading in new packs you have these packs to reload if you want to keep them.

Hello Jo,
The first thing I did was install the update 1.3 and it went with no problems.

I have now looked a little into the pre loaded packs. When I first got the keyboard I went to this section and found all the style titles but could not get them to load. On then going to the Expansion page I then found a restore file for these four packs. I pressed it and it tells you that this will format your memory, so anything else you may have loaded in will be cleared. Now you see why you need to download the packs to put into the YEM if you want to load other packs as well. Its clever really. Having gone through the styles I won't be using any of them as in the UK we are more into standard styles for big band and dancing.
I don't think anyone should try to compare this model with other keyboards. The SX900 is a new keyboard in its own right. The operating system is very similar to genos and touch screen works well and the Keyboard no longer tattles and has a nice feel to it.Yes it dose use some Genos styles and voices and registrations from Genos and the PSR970 load in and will work nicely.
I have also loaded in a couple of Genos packs and they are working fine.
That is as far as I have got so far. Taking a break before moving on to the other new functions.
If you are looking for a 61 note keyboard for home use or gigging then it is well worth having a try
of this keyboard if you have the chance to.

Thanks Eileen,

I guess I could have asked in 1 question... do the preinstalled packs use the 1GB expansion memory.  I suspect so. I'm with you, I wouldn't be interested in any of those packs.  I think it's a marketing strategy to get a bigger market share in certain parts of the world.

Hi Toril :

We have to wait for approx. 6 - 8 weeks before more SX900 feedbacks are coming in, I guess.

I may hope the SX900 sound quality has been improved.
That's what new owners are expecting and hoping.

May their wish come true !

Is it your intention to sell your S975 and go for an SX900 if the sound quality has been improved ?

Enjoy your Sunday afternoon, Babette

Title: Re: My SX900 has arrived.
Post by: Toril S on September 22, 2019, 12:03:40 PM
No Babette. I will not sell my S975 because it is more practical for me to have buttons instead of touch screen. Just curious. I will try it in my store when it arrives.
Title: Re: My SX900 has arrived.
Post by: beykock on September 22, 2019, 12:37:44 PM
I wonder if Yamaha will ever come back with buttons ?

I do not think so. 😰
Touch screens seem to be much cheaper for them. Lower production costs, I guess.

There are buttons as well as touch screen on the SX900. So you can choose to select voices or style sections using these if you prefer.

Could the deafening silence perhaps indicate disappointment? An excited person would have said a lot of things by now.

If it was me and the results were as expected, all over here would by now be exhausted by my continuous babbling...

The person posted here twice since receiption - not a single statement thus far on what an incredible investment this turned out to be.

We have another owner having it for more than a day already - no feedback whatsoever. "Fraid all of this makes quite a statement by itself. I am a huge fan of Yamaha - no intention of discrediting anything of theirs. I just expected more optimism.

Be patient Henni, I guarantee that very positive messages will appear about the SX900 ......... and that very negative messages will also appear. ;) You will be able to read that in every forum and find it with every new model. The one wants to convince the other of 'good - better - best', sometimes based solely on a feeling. Everyone has 'sometimes' a hidden agenda with his reaction, sometimes what you 'don't' write says more than you do write. Fortunately, nobody has to talk to anyone about whether or not they should be happy about something .... everyone determines that for themselves. OK, end of my "Sunday" sermon  ;D ... we'll be happy to talk about the SX900 ...
Title: Re: My SX900 has arrived.
Post by: beykock on September 22, 2019, 04:54:25 PM
Hi Ton / Henni :

I do not expect any negative reactions.
The SX900 is a successful product.

As far as I know only 2 members received their new arranger yesterday.
I think they need some time to install their babies first ... we all know this job takes some time.

First impressions will follow soon. Do not worry.😉
Details later, I guess.

Well it does take time to go through every thing as you can imagine.
I am very pleased with the keyboard. What I am impressed with is that you can load in Genos packs that sound great when played through the SX900. Also it will play Genos registrations and Tyros5 which will save a lot of time if you are wanting to Gig with it. It is very similar to Genos to operate and the touch screen works fine. The keybed has been improved and no longer rattles when playing softly.
Have not had a chance to use the chord looper yet. Have found the demo songs on chord tracker on my I Pad and will load them in and see how they sound.
All in all a very nice keyboard.

Sorry Henni but if you already have owned a bunch of keyboards and also own a Genos as Eileen has,
I wouldn't expect to be as excited as someone moving let's say from an s910 to SX900.
Anyway as Babette already said you have to edit stuff to your liking first to make the instrument to sound as you want. :)

That's a ditto.  Besides when you get to be in your eighties... there isn't much to get excited about mundane things like a new keyboard... we become too wise to get excited about such trivial things. We already know that each keyboard model just gets better and better.

I waited 14 years before I upgraded, so I was REALLY exited! Then there was not just a few small changes, but a major upgrade!
I unwillingly changed from my S970 to S975, and that did not get me exited. It was just like getting the same keyboard back. Yes, there was some improvements, but only minor.
Title: Re: My SX900 has arrived.
Post by: beykock on September 22, 2019, 08:53:15 PM
The S975 was a small upgrade.
I would call it an update instead of an upgrade.

I think the SX900 is a real upgrade and looks to be more than just a baby Genos.

Should not be surprised the Genos2 would be launched next year.

Eileen,

Thank u for your review of the SX 900.  I have a PSR 950 and curious if the registrations I have on the 950 will play on the 900.   Clearly there will be some difference with voicing but will the styles basically play on the 900

Congratulations and anxious to hear more about the new system

Thank you and have a great day

Hi Guys :

I really wonder if there is a commercial future for the Genos yet ?

Will people still buy a new Genos whilst the SX900 is available now and ... 50% lower in price ?

Even Tyros4 and Tyros5 owners seem to be very interested in buying an SX900.

You may say I am crazy and confused but I think only Yamaha can answer that question.
I am looking forward to hearing their reaction soon.

Don’t get mixed up with all the hype regarding the new 900

Take a listen to a clarinet played on a Tyros 5 or Genos
Then listen to a clarinet played on a SX900
100 miles apart

Sx900 has some new features, touch screen etc. and some new features for EDM players but the sound department hasn’t changed much, same voices as the S950, few new ones.

Do I need a “Rotary switch” on the dash when I can work the rotary speed from a pedal
And that’s been around for the past 10+ years

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice keyboard and I may even buy one.

I played a 900 last week, if your a gigger like me, then the weight and the size may tempt you, but  it’s not a Tyros 5 or a Genos  -  but good enough for a gig or two.

Hi all a lot of question but I will try my best to answer.
Bob cant be a hundred percent sure about registrations. If you post one here I will try it for you. As for styles, if you are using on board styles then the keyboard will pick the nearest style to it. If you mean third part styles then yes they will load and work but if attached to registration banks will most probably need to be relinked.
  Hello John.
When loading in a bank from Genos the first eight buttons will load so you will not have the last two.
Not a problem as most people are used to only using eight on previous keyboards.
Hi Babette I really do not understand your passion for these type of questions. Of course there will still be a good market for Genos. As I have said before the SX900 is a very nice keyboard but it is not a Genos or a Baby Genos. It uses the same operating system and the touch screen layout is the same but it is still a Yamaha model in its own right. Maybe if you tried these keyboards you would understand more.
Title: Re: My SX900 has arrived.
Post by: Pino on September 24, 2019, 01:05:44 PM
If you have your present keyboard “stage ready” the it will take you at least a few weeks to get this 900 stage ready.

I thought that when I upgraded from the 950 to the 975 that is was going to be easy.

Well, it wasn’t. I had to go through every registration and OTS and edit everything again.

If your a home player then maybe not so important.

Hi Eileen :

Most people might be more and more convinced, thanks
in part to your own first impressions and your first " tests " - for which I am very grateful - the SX900 might be called a
" Baby Genos " and is a great, pro arranger keyboard.

On the internet this statement has been confirmed by the German press today.

I know you disagree but the sales of the Genos might slow down due to the presence of the SX900.

The near future will tell us much more, I guess.

... the SX900 might be called a  " Baby Genos " and is a great, pro arranger keyboard...

Yamaha has upgraded the quality of both the TOTL and mid-range arrangers.  Genos is the TOTL and the sx900 is the flagship for the mid-range. The sx900 is NOT a "baby Genos"... it is the new standard for the mid-range arrangers. The TOTL will always have more features and capabilities.

Yamaha is just following the conventions since Tyros 1. Genos and PSR sx series are the next generation arrangers.

Babette,
Why oh why are you so interested in sales of keyboards. Surely this forum is for helping people get the best from there keyboards or asking questions on how to do things. I am sure people do not want to keep hearing if this or that keyboard will survive. We should all be asking more constructive questions on what we have now.
I have Just posted a song quickly played on SX900 straight to MP3 in performers section. How about doing the same with your keyboard instead of keep going on about what will or will not be in the future.
Title: Re: My SX900 has arrived.

Hi Eileen,

Thanks for posting the song, I will go and listen to it.

Since there are so few songs played on the SX900 so far, I suggest you post another topic in the SX forum with a link to your song. Many people might be hanging here who are not used to going to the Performers section. This would enable more people to listen to your song. Also, it will be more visible than in the present topic.

A good question, Eileen.

I cannot and will not discuss my professional music life here.

Like more people here, I am very interested in Yamaha's arranger keyboards : new models, specs, features, opinions, competition information and prices.

I love Yamaha's arrangers and their great synths.
Since 2001 I am a Yamaha keyboard user.

I am also learning a lot here about Yamaha's software and applications.
I like this forum very much.

If you believe my questions, my opinion and my input are useless for this forum, plse do not hesitate to tell me.

Best regards, Babette

I will also hope I can convert MF files to playlist, which gave you an automatic reg bank named and ready to load, which was a great bonus on Genos.

Like more people here, I am very interested in Yamaha's arranger keyboards : new models, specs, features, opinions, competition information and prices.
Babette - the main purpose of this forum is to help people get the best from their Yamaha arranger. While there is of course always some interest in side issues like prices, future models, sales etc, they are not the main focus. And I understand Eileen's comment, because it seems that an unusually high proportion of your posts are focussed on speculation about sales, pricing, and rumors. That might be getting a bit old.

Hi Mike :

Thank you for your reaction.

No problem.
I will no longer bother people here with my questions and/or my comments.
It has never been my intention to hurt people.
As far as I know I never did but ... who am I.

Take care !
Best regards, Babette

Hello Babette,
You don't hurt people but it dose become annoying when you keep posting the same thing over and over. We have all saved and bought the keyboard that suits us and I for one do not want to hear how popular it will be after a new model comes along be it Yamaha or Korg. It just is not useful information. By all means discus your own findings with your keyboard and how you use it or if you find problems or can pass on any little tips you may find helpful. That is what we are all trying to do.

Hi Eileen :

Thank you for your reply.

Yesterday evening I have decided no longer to participate in any discussion.
I will follow the daily threads of this great forum though.

Finally I herewith would like to congratulate all present and future SX900 owners of this forum.
Yamaha are manufacturing great products.👍

All the best to you and all other members !

Best regards,
Babette

So, in under 24 hours your back again.

Instead of posting here every 10 munites of the day
Why don’t you spend your time playing your Tyros 5
And upload some of your music here.

We want to hear you play the arranger keyboard.

Waiting 🤔

Hi Eileen,

I'm wondering why you would buy the SX900 when you have a Genos, are you unhappy with it, or is it part of a collection please?

Thanks

Colin

The operating system is very similar to genos and touch screen works well and the Keyboard no longer tattles and has a nice feel to it.Yes it dose use some Genos styles and voices and registrations from Genos and the PSR970 load in and will work nicely.
I have also loaded in a couple of Genos packs and they are working fine.
That is as far as I have got so far. Taking a break before moving on to the other new functions.
If you are looking for a 61 note keyboard for home use or gigging then it is well worth having a try
of this keyboard if you have the chance to.

Do I understand you to say that you can load in Genos Styles because I have tried and nothing is showing up on the SX900. Any ideas where I may be going wrong?

Richard.

Hi Eileen.Sorry to bother you.Having started to explore my new sx900 I have just gone into the playlist section where there only seems to be 6 sample songs.I just wondered if that is all they include now there is no music finder or do I have to download anything else? Many thanks.Larry.

Hello Colin,
I am very happy with my Genos. All I have done is swapped my 970 for the SX900 as it is easier for me to carry to small venues such as Care Homes. I would not part with my Genos for anything.

Hello Richard,
You can load styles from Genos or Tyros 5 plus third party styles. Just select style on the screen and then tab to where the styles are stored  on USB. Have sent you a PM.

Hey Eileen!

Can you tell if you can tell if VH is on or off on the home screen?
No need to open another screen or function to see this.
This is my curiosity.

Cheers

Yamaha products UK.

Do you expect price changes in the UK after the Brexit ?
Maybe UK enduser prices might become lower
( USA prices ? ) then than European prices, who knows ?☝

Babette

In case of devaluation of GBP, no. In UK, after brexit, it will be more expansive than in USA.

Hi Francesco,
These voices can only be accessed from the style section as on Genos. You can not use them to assign to Right hand voices and play.

Yeah ... I guess I'll only know when I have access to the SX900.
I didn't think a yes or no was so complicated.
In October I will be making a trip to London and I think I will have the opportunity to see the SX900 up close and clear some doubts.
