Title: CASM Editor for Genos Styles

Hello all !

The CASM Editor software - version 1.42 -  don't work for Genos styles because it don't support the SFF2 format.
So, what free software can we use instead ?

By the way, what do the acronym 'CASM' stand for ?

It's a full style editor and is compatible with SFF GE.

Buy a copy of StyleMagic YA.  It's worth the money. It's supports the Genos and many earlier model arrangers. Only Yamaha know what CASM stands for.

A standard MIDI file consists of several data chunks. Each chunk has an identifier which specifies the type of data in the chunk, e.g., MThd and MTrk. The identifiers are four characters long.

A style file is a standard MIDI file with conventional MIDI chunks and Yamaha proprietary chunks. One of these proprietary chunks is the CASM chunk.

CASM is the four character identifier for the chunk containing chord transpositin data such as the NTTs and NTRs, chord note, chord type, etc. A CASM editor modifies the CASM chunk.

If you Google "CASM", you'll find out that no one knows what it stands for.

CASM acronym : still a mystery ... Wait and see, probably somebody on the planet get the explantion...

If casm is a huge gap or a deep hole,it probably means filling in missing detail in our terms.
If not i have just dug myself a bigger hole!!! :P :P :P :P :P

I always understood CASM to mean "Chord And Style Metadata"

I may be wrong...  ;D ::)

Hi all,

Our forum members Peter Wierzba and Michael P. Bedesem have written a detailed Style File Description that can be downloaded here:

It probably doesn't mention whether "CASM" is made up of the first letters of any terms. But fact is that the (optional) CASM section in Style files is called that because these are the first four Bytes of this section. (See also Table 7 on page 12 in the mentioned file "StyleFileDescription_v21.pdf".)

byte[0] = 'C'  (43H)
byte[1] = 'A’  (41H)
byte[2] = 'S'  (53H)
byte[3] = 'M'  (4DH)

This 4-character sequence identifies this
section as a CASM section.
Note: The characters are case sensitive.

What I found fascinating in one of the videos it is explained how a style file differs as a midi. It showed the structure of a Yamaha style file. It talked about what proprietary rights Yamaha uses in their style construction. It couldn't go into any detail saying that Yamaha calls this a "black box" and it remains a Yamaha secret as to how it works. Now I am really curious. Can anyone elaborate any further on this?  Two weeks ago I didn't even know what CASM was. Now I can't get enough!!!  I must know these secrets!!  -charley

Hi 'Rattley',
Download the document that is mentioned in the third video, it is very useful for working with styles.

A little remark : if all midi parts of the style are in CM7 and only 8 channels are used, then the style does not even need a CASM.
