Title: How to play songs on ipad through Genos optional speakers
Post by: gmizrahi on January 26, 2019, 08:09:38 PM
Hi, I would like to use the optional Genos speakers to play music from my ipad/iphone from any app. This should be an easy way but I don't seem to be able to accomplish that. Previously, I had the Yamaha P125 piano and by connecting to its USB port with my ipad, i was able to listen to play sound from any app with the internal speakers. Please help.

thanks,

Gabi

There is an audio in (l+r) on your Genos..  buy a cable that connects the ipad headset output to the genos in.. (mini stereo jack to 2 mono 1/4” jacks)..

Keep in mind tough, that since its a headset output the impedance is not very suited for audio output
Also on the latest iphones and ipad pro there is no headset output..

So the best way is using an ipad usb camera connection plug. You will want to connect a professional audio interface to this.. this will only work with a powered usb hub inbetween, as the audio interface in general powers from the USB and the ipad USB can not be used for this.. last step is connecting the audio out of the Audio interface to the Genos..

Yes its a pitty that Genos does not have audio over USB nor does it have a specific audio input with the right impedance for mobile devices..

“..last step is connecting the audio out of the Audio interface to the Genos”

Do you mean connecting the AI to the Genos usb to host?

Thanks

Why not just connect the iPad to the speakers. What do you need the Genos for?

Cheers,

Fred, thanks for your reply. I am using Piano Marvel and Simply Piano apps on my ipad. Those apps send the midi signal to the USB to host port on the Genos. So when I play songs on those apps, Genos would receive the midi signals but the sound of the music is coming from the ipad speakers rather than the Genos optional speakers. Hope this explains why. Thanks. Gabi

Ok I figured it out! I have the new iPad Pro Which has a USB-c rather than lightning port. So I have this USB-C hub that has several USB ports and 3 1/2 mm portt. I connected the 3 1/2 mm port and use an adapter quarter-inch to Gino’s L/R quarter inch port. Thanks everyone for your reply you input really help me figure it out! I have attached a picture a of that hub.

I don’t think thats even remotely funny..

And if its not meant funny, i don’t understand your answer, because the speakers offcourse are connected to the Genos

Settle down, Bachus. It was a valid question.

My speakers are connected to the Genos, but they can also take other inputs. I can easily have my iPad play through my speakers without the Genos, but, of course, I'm playing mp3 files.

The OP answered the question by saying he wants to play midi files, so needing the Genos makes sense. Most midi files would sound much better played by the Genos, than by an iPad app.

The OP didn't take offense. Why would you?

Cheers,
Fred

I played MIDI files through Songbook+ app on iPad Pro that is connected with Genos through the Bluetooth MIDI adapter MD-BT01, Genos played the MIDI files successfully with great sounds from its own GNS-MS01 2.1 speakers.

For audio playback, the iPad Pro can be connected to an external audio interface with outputs connected to the Aux in L+R ports of Genos.  For older iPad Pros with headphones jack, a 3.5mm-to-stereo-quarter-inch cable is an economical audio connection between its headphones jack and the Aux in L+R ports of Genos.

This isn’t making sense to me - surely the L/R phono port only passes sound through the Genos amp and speakers? Surely you can’t play midi this way. The midi would already have to have been processed into an audio file??

The hub connects to Genos to USB host port as well. That’s how it’s getting midi signal

I still don’t get it -  I don’t think you can be sending a midi file to the Genos.  You wouldn’t send it through the speaker pass through. Are you sure you are not processing the midi file on the iPad and just passing an audio signal through the Genos  to the speakers? I believe this is what you are doing because you state you hear sound from the iPad, and midi files have no sound, they are data files that have to be processed by a midi player to produce any sound. Of course the Genos has superb sound processing for midi but I don’t think you are using it and if that is the case, Fred is right, you could just go straight to the speakers, like you could with any audio signal, like an mp3.

Mike, I am sorry for the confusion. The Genos merely acts a MIDI keyboard. The ipad app (Marvel Piano, Simply Piano, etc) receive the MIDI signal from the keyboard through USB to host cable. My goal is to get the ipad sound from the apps through the Genos optional speakers while I am using eh keyboard as MIDI. Previously with my Yamaha p125, I would just connect the keyboard to my ipad though the USB to host cable to get the midi signal and get the ipad sound directly in the speakers without any additional cables. I was hoping to do the same with the Genos.

Gabi - I think I understand what you are doing, and of course it works, but its not what you think. Its not because you have a midi playing on the keyboard. You are passing audio signals, not midi files, through the keyboard to your speakers. The keyboard is  really only acting as a conduit to the speakers. That has nothing to do with MIDI.
MIDI is a set of digital instructions like play the note C, how long, how loud, which voice to select, which effect etc etc. A MIDI file is thousands of these digital instructions and they then have to be processed through a sound module, because there is no audio. The keyboard really plays a midi exactly as if you were actually playing the keyboard and producing these instructions manually.
On your 125, you were connected through the USB port, so in theory you could have been passing a midi to the keyboard. But I doubt  you were. You probably have an app on your iPad which is processing the midi and producing an audio signal. Since the speakers on the 125 were internal, the only way to get the audio signal to them was to pass the sound through the keyboard via the USB. That is also exactly what you are doing on the Genos, except now passing it through through the L/R port. But since on the Genos the speakers are external, there is actually no need to pass the audio through the keyboard to get to them. You could equally well connect the iPad directly to them. That is a choice.
Sorry to be so long winded, but I think its good to understand how these things work, and what midi does compared to audio files like MP3s.
I apologise if you already know all this.
Mike

Hi Gaby,

the P-125 has a built-in USB MIDI & Audio Interface, therefore you CAN connect an external device like an iPad via USB and play Digital Audio from iOS apps over the P-125 internal Speakers.

In difference, the Genos has only MIDI functiality via USB (NO AUDIO interface). So, you can NOT feed Digital Audio via USB to the Genos.

BUT Genos has a built-in Wireless LAN (WiFi) adapter. And in the Genos Owner's Manual (page 86) is mentioned that in the Mixer (Panel 2 display) you can control the AUX IN jacks (where you can feed the (analogue) headphone output signal of the iPad), AND you can also control the "Wireless LAN Audio Part".

Unfortunately, I did NOT check this possibility by myself, so far. I also don't know HOW to get out a digital Audio signal via WiFi from the iPad.

P.S.
To connect your iPad via WiFi to the Genos (in principle), you can use the "Infrastructure Mode" on Genos (= connection via your WiFi Router), OR you can make a WiFi connection from the iPad directy to the Genos (= "Access Point Mode" on Genos). Please refer to "Network Settings" in Genos Reference Manual, starting on page 142.

I think the simplest way to wirelessly connect I pad to either the keyboard or the the speakers is to buy a Bluetooth receiver and plug it into the keyboard L/R socket or the input socket on the speaker. Then you should be able to pair it with your iPad and send audio. These devices are not expensive.

It looks like the AUX in and WLAN under Menue/Mixer is grayed out. On another note, Yamaha Cord Tracker app can play your iTunes songs while wirelessly connected. (of course, you have to select the instrument first in the app) Any thoughts?

Hi Gabi,

"Infrastructure Mode" means in this case: both the iPad AND the Genos are connected via WiFi to your local router. The iPad has connection to the internet via your local WiFi Network (over the router), and also Genos and the iPad can communicate via the local WiFi Network (also over the router).

Normally, the WiFi connection from iPad or a computer to the Genos is used for MIDI data, but (if the info in Genos Manual ist true), one can also send AUDIO from iPad or computer TO the Genos.

Best regards,
Chris

I have not tried it but will get one for myself.  To connect my iPad via bluetooth to my Bose L1 speaker.

thanks

Exactly Al.  You might need an adapter to go from mini Jack to 1/4 inch jack, but those are cheap and available, and sometimes supplied free with headphones.
You cant use bluetooth though to wirelessly connect a keyboard to speakers for live playing. There have been many discussions about this on this forum. But it will work perfectly well for normal recorded music, radio etc where latency ( the micro time delay inherent in bluetooth) ) doesn't matter.
