Post by: chet808 on November 08, 2018, 09:33:09 AM
Does the vocal cancel feature work for anyone? I can’t get mine to work it sounds muffled and really bad just wondering if something is wrong with my keyboard

It's normal.
This function does not work well in any instrument!

Judging from all the posts here, vocal cancel does not work for anyone.

Cheers,
Fred

Hi chet808,

this "Vocal Cancel" feature works reasonably well with just a few files.

The result depends on how a particular Audio file is mixed. In principle, in the method used here, only the signals in the Stereo center (where usually the lead voice is located) are made quieter (by summing up the two Stereo channels "out of phase").

BUT with MOST of the existing Audio songs (MP3s) this method does NOT work well, unfortunately.

Best regards,
Chris

This feature does not work well. The alternative is to find a good instrumental version of the song, either MIDI or MP3, and sing along to this version, or, even better, find a "Songstyle", so you can both play the song yourself and sing it :)

Thank you everyone you’ve answered my question well. I was just worried that something was wrong with my keyboard. Why would they even put such a feature like there if it don’t work. Makes no sense to me. I don’t use it anyway but want to try it out to see if it would work.

The Wav file has to be recorded a certain way for it to work correctly. If you use Yamahas Note Star song you purchase for that do work.

Try Phonicmind, it’s not free but it’s much better than the Vocal remover of the S970

Primarily for the Asian markets. All around that portion of the globe many of the pop songs are intentionally mixed in such a way that this feature works OK. The only allowed change is panning the main vocal/melody part away from the center. That's why all Yamaha's also provide "Suppressor Pan" control.

If you are really interested on how this is done, there are tutorials on Youtube mentioning "mono mixing" or similar verbiage.
