Title: Using a USB hub with T5
Post by: DerekA on November 02, 2018, 12:57:14 PM
Hello

What I want to do is have my main USB in the front port, and newer remove it; then have the WiFi dongle and a second USB on a USB hub attached to the back port. Then I can plug and unplug the second USB easily from the hub (to work with the laptop) without risking damage to the keyboard's port, and always have WiFi available.

So far I have not got this to work. I've tried a couple of hubs but in both cases the keyboard does not see anything that I plug into the hub.

Anyone had any luck with this?

I never tried to connect a hub. IMHO it will not work at all.

Are your hubs powered?   If not, that maybe why it isn't working for you.

The wifi dongle is taking too much power. I also think it will work if you power the hub.

Hi DerekA,

in Tyros4 Owner's Manual (page 100) USB Hubs are explicitly mentioned:

Compatible USB devices
• USB storage devices (flash memory, etc.)
• USB hub
• USB-LAN adaptor
The instrument does not necessarily support all commercially
available USB devices. Yamaha cannot guarantee
operation of USB devices that you purchase.

But in Tyros5 Owner's Manual (page 101), the USB Hub entry has gone:

Compatible USB devices
• USB flash memory
• USB wireless LAN adaptor (which is included only in
some areas)
Other USB devices such as a computer keyboard or
mouse cannot be used.
The instrument does not necessarily support all commercially
available USB devices. Yamaha cannot guarantee
operation of USB devices that you purchase.

In Tyros4 "Compatible USB Device Lists" (2013/2016) the following USB Hubs are mentioned:

(List of September 2013)
BELKIN F5U307ukWHT Discontinued model
Kensington K33141EUB Discontinued model
Trust 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub 15920 Discontinued model
Trust 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub 17145 Discontinued model
SWEEX US009UK Discontinued model

(List of March 2016)
MCL USB2-H154/N
StarTech ST4300PBU3
BELKIN F5U307ukWHT Discontinued model
Kensington K33141EUB Discontinued model
Trust 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub 15920 Discontinued model
Trust 4 Port USB 2.0 Hub 17145 Discontinued model
SWEEX US009UK Discontinued model

In Tyros5 "Compatible USB Device Lists", to my knowledge, USB Hubs were NEVER mentioned. Therefore, I'm afraid that Tyros5 does NOT support USB hubs in principle.

Best regards,
Chris

Did you try a powered hub?

Used a hub with T4 successfuly, T5, didn't work, neither does it work on Genos. With so much space available why do you need more? I just got more creative with custom playlists and with User, USB1 and USB2 you have as much accessibility and availability as having a hub. Remember, less is more. Don in MI

Hi Don, it's not a matter of space, it's more about not wanting to damage the socket on the keyboard by frequent plugging/unplugging.

Hi Toril - no I've not tried a powered hub, I would need to buy one and I've already bought 2 non-powered ones.

To protect the socket just buy a usb extension cable. I have done that. Many other forum members too😀

Why would you want to mess about with USB hubs when you have a 500 Gb hard drive in your tyros 5.
You can save as many USB stick contents to it as you like and recall them immediately at the push of a button.
Just create some folders on your hard drive and copy your USB sticks to them. You can then back them up on your computer from time to time as you add new content.

That's the point ... I frequently want to copy styles, voices, etc. that are posted on this forum onto the keyboard and I don't want to keep unplugging the USB. I guess I need to buy a simple USB extension as Toril says, rather than a hub.

Yes I have used a two inch extension lead for many years and still use it in my Genos. Saves a lot of ware and tare.
