Explained in the post at the following link, although it refers to 'stars' rather than 'squares' ...

I'm not certain, but I believe it's related to the number of posts that you've made; when looking at how many squares members have above their avatars, compare that with the "number of posts" count below their avatar. I think it's just a visual way to show how active a member is in-- sort of like "veteran" versus "newbie," except not necessarily related to the length of time that one has been a member. This is the sort of thing that many forums do, so I presume it's a common feature in forum software.

Ian posted while I was typing. As you can see in Joe's explanation, it's related to the number of posts made.

I too have always thought that they were related to the number of posts etc.  HOWEVER it is not fact.

Take a look at Eileen's posts and you will see that she only has 4 squares with a very large post count yet I have 5 squares with only a very moderate count.

I have only 3 😀. There is soomething about the color of the stars too, but I do not remember how it is determined.

Hm, it seems there may be more at work here. I think certain subforums don't count toward your post count-- such as songs played by members?-- but there should still be a correlation between the count that's displayed below your avatar, because those subforum posts don't affect that post count.

I wonder if this was affected by the Great Accidental Purge? That is, I wonder if it's based only on the posts made since the purge, while the post count reflects posts made both before and after?

Songs played by forum member counts now. I know, I listen, comment and post there all the time, and my count is rising :)

That's good to know-- although I see that you have only three squares above your avatar, so perhaps the posts that you've made in the songs forum don't count toward the number of squares?

Maybe. I read something about this before The Purge.

Yesterday they were squares - today they are stars. Interesting.

Just did a quick comparison and the stars revealed the following pattern:

Novice poster 1 yellow star
Junior member 2 yellow
Asst. member 3 yellow
Supporter, Senior member 4 yellow
Charter, Senior 4 yellow
Supporter Asooc member 4 yellow
PSR Performer, supporter, senior member 4 yellow
Assoc member 4 yellow

Psr performer, admin, senior member 5 redish gold

Assoc member 1 green
Global moderator, senior member  3 green or 5 purple

psr performer, senior member 4 green

Senior member 5 yellow

Did not go any further.
