Title: Is this safe? USB light and Pen drive.
Post by: Normanfernandez on September 26, 2018, 12:58:47 PM
I've used a USB Light on the keyboard ( Keyboard USB PORT)

The  keyboard can Handle 2 Pen Drives
If I use a USB Hub and Connect the Light and Another Pen Drive at the same time.
Is it safe??

I believe that there is a 'standard' for the power available from a USB port, which is 500mA (milliamp) maximum at 5 volts.

Pen drives take very little power but other devices may take more, I would think that the light you use should have a power rating somewhere on it.

Normally single devices don't exceed the power rating but when several devices are connected via a hub then that may cause a problem.

I used to have a small USB light and also a pen drive both connected at same time to my Tyros 4 an Tyros 5.

However, there were not on a hub, they were each on their individual T5 USB

Never had a problem.

I used the light to better see the music sheets, however, i moved to iPad now, so I no longer need the USB ligth.  But used it for a couple of years with no problem.

thanks

We have 1 port , it's Max power supply is 500 ma , I'll have to check how power does a USB hub take

DONT use cheap devices powering themselves from USB. Especially power consuming devices like lights (even LED) or fans, motors, etc. Under some circumstances, it can burn out the USB controller .. that will mean a new board. USB lights can spike on switch-on asto much as 10 times their rated current!

Not worth the risk!

Hi Norman. I agree with Al. Stay clear. Get a lamp that is powered the traditional way, or, if you use an USB light, power it by using an USB adapter and connect that to a wall socket. That way, you don't damage the USB controller on your keyboard.
