Title: How good is the MIDI recorder on the S970?
Post by: Toril S on August 20, 2018, 08:03:50 PM
Hello friends :) I wonder how good the onboard sequencer of the S970 really is? The reason for this question is this:
I recorded a song with some great organ voices (quick recording). When I played back the MIDI song file, the organs sounded thinner, it soundet as if some of the effects were gone. This is not logical to me, since the MIDI file just tells the keyboard what notes to play and how to play them. I also sometimes get glitches when I record to MIDI. So I just wondered. I am always curious...

The onboard sequencer will faithfully record every key press, so no worries there.

If you made a single pass quick record, it should sound exactly as you recorded it. But remember there are only 4 DSP available  on the S970. If you choose another panel voice before saving the MIDI file, or while playing it back, the panel voice may steal one of the DSP from the song channels.

Thanks DerekA! Maybe that is what happened.

I've made many recordings on the keyboard.  When I change OTS the recordings all sound the same as the original, so I'm not sure what your problem is Toril.

The organ sound was a little different when I played back the song, Joe H

Hi Toril
I find the midi quick recorder very good on the 970 - I use it all the time unless ....... I'm using an audio multipad in my song - the quick recorder doesn't record the audio multipads so in those cases I have to use the audio recorder.
Regards
Sue 😀

Hello Sue. I also use it all the time. I also make an mp3 and a wav file, but must always have a MIDI😀

I have a big question regarding Song Creator
( PSR S770)

We can Record using Right hand 1
For all the Channels If we want to.

It's true about the DSP
it's just 4

I have two Questions.
How do I Add a part onto a channel and Start for a Certain Point.
Say Bar 20

My other question is
How do I have DSP changes?
Say for E.g ( Channel 1 has two Voices , and I want to change the DSP for the 2nd voice is it possible?

Hello NormanFernandez,  Of course it is possible to insert an effect, (Reverb, Chorus, or DSP) in a specific measure, and in a specific channel of a song. just go to SongCreator and with the tabbed key go to tab 1-16, and select the channel to which the effect will be inserted. once the channel is selected, select the measure where the effect will be inserted, for example: measure 15. As there are already recorded notes, select INSERT. this will double the first bar of the measurement, then select NOTE, and with the dial turn until you find CTRL, a 0 will appear, forward of CTRL, then turn the dial until 94, which is the code number of the DSP . to change the intensity of the effect, move the dial again from 0 to 127, understanding that in 0, there is no effect and 127, maximum level of effect.
You can also apply this in a channel where there is an instrument change.  using the Ctrl changes properly, you can insert voices, effects, modulation, vibrato and programs.  I hope this helps.   Greetings. Hans

Norman,

You might try using the OTS to make your Voice / DSP changes.  The OTS changes will be recorded in the MIDI file.

It looks like an abbreviation for "Reset All Controllers".  That is an GM/XG Command for resetting numerous MIDI controllers to their "default" setting.

Controller 121 with a value of 0... This message returns the following data to the default state.
Pitch Bend, Modulation, Expression, Sustain, Portamento, Sostenuto, Soft Pedal, Registered
Parameter Number

On/Off switch
0 to 63 = Off, 64 to 127 = On

That's one question sorted out

It's not really a switch.  Controller 121 is a channel MODE message.  The data range is just 0

Thanks for the additional information,

My first question is actually related to
Adding more parts to the Song
But started at a certain point in the song.

I'll give the DSP a Extreme test and let you guys know
Thanks!
