Title: USB 2.0 or 3.0
Post by: guitpic1 on February 16, 2018, 06:43:33 PM
Will Genos handle USB 3.0?

If so, does it matter which USB port is used?

Although Genos is basically USB2 it will work fine with USB3. If you have things on the stick liked the extra Playlists and set ups that are linked to certain styles then you need to make sure that this is the stick that is plugged in first and must read USB1 on Genos. This is the one a lot of us have chosen to place under the keyboard in the secure spot.

Tx Eileen.

Do you know what is the largest size USB that Genos will accommodate?

I checked the downloads page and the largest stick was 32 gig.

I use a 64GB USB 3.1 stick without any problem. It has a little lag when I first time access it, but after that it is ok.

Vali

I've used several 256GB and even one 512GB flash drive with no problems. Just make sure they are formatted FAT32. The largest flash drives usually come as ExFAT which won't be recognised by Genos OS. Just reformat it as FAT32.

I use a 64Gb Scandisk and it works fine and is plenty big enough for my use.

Both the 64GB and 32GB Kingston DataTraveller® SE9 G2 USB3 works great.
Neat, small and nice design as well.

I can report that you can be really clever .. and use a Sandisk USB OTG (on the go) 64Gb if you like ..
This way, you can use the same stick to connect to your Smartphone (Micro USB one end, USB the other)
Obviously, will work in laptop/PC as any other. I also used mine on my old Tyros 5.
Here's mine plugged (the micro USB connector is on opposite end to main one, slid away inside when not in use, also very compact)

Yamaha had 'plenty' of time to incorporate the much faster USB 3 into its circuitry. In 'real' worls, probably 3-4  times faster that USB2. Dissapointing.
Same again for the Wi-Fi board, NO 5Ghz, which allows up to ac speed .. very rapid compared to 2.4G (which everything else of age uses!

My guess (for both) is this is for cost-saving reasons.

We've had this discussion in the forum already.😁
Based on the old flash drive compatibility info in their own documentation, it would appear that Yamaha didn't bother to focus on USB at all for the Genos design.

Luckily most Genos flash drive data operations are small enough that USB 2.0 is still fast enough.

Yes I have no problem with mine at all. I have my main permanent one fixed underneath the keyboard which contains my whole Tyros 5 Back up plus the new playlists. I am slowly transferring this to the User section so I free up space then on my USB.

Eileen .. Hi

I expect you realise this, but make sure you have another 'backup of backups' kept on a unused USB drive somewhere. USB's in write/rewrite have (eventual) limitation .. they can corrupt at any time .. and (contrary to popular belief) they do wear out (although we'll all be gone and buried by then!)
